No clue on how to use a sprite sheet.

Posted 16 May 2013 - 05:50 PM

hello. I am trying to understand how to use sprite sheets.
I'm using javascript for this project.

From what I understand, using a sprite sheet is basically sending one square of the whole pic and then looping it to where the square keeps moving to the next image, creating a animation effect.

If this is right, how do you know the exact sizes/where to start, ect.

for example

how will i know what to input to create the illusion the character was moving right with that sprite sheet?

Typically 0,0 is in the top left. You can set your view port from there.. so going to the right increases the x axis.. and going down increases the y access. If you don't know where your images are start by rendering from 0,0 and some arbitrary height and width.. then zero in on your location. That or put the image in your favorite graphics app and look where your mouse is and do the math to get to there in your view port.
