Best OS for a Web Server

Posted 31 August 2007 - 01:55 PM

Which could be the best OS (considering reliability, security etc) for a Web Server..
I am planning to go for the LAMP stack because of the cost reason..
But which Linux distribution is the best suited for Web Server?
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I'd say that's probably a little tough. :) My personal preference, yes.. But from the sounds of it, this guy has limited Linux experience.

My vote is going to go to CentOS. Then he can take advantage of any RHEL-goodness on the net.

Well, if you don't want to leave your comfort zone, Ubuntu has a server edition. :)

I suppose for a beginner it may be a bit tough but if you throw yourself into it it's worth the few hours of reading.

I set up a test server at home before I had any hosting. All I had to hand was a Compaq Deskpro 350Mhz 64mb ram 15gb hdd. Gentoo made the absolute most out of this hardware running fast and secure and the only configuration needed to get it running as a web server was emerge the packages I want and do the standard apache config for the sites I'm running.

But yes, if Gentoo is a little daunting I've heard good things about Centos.

I would have to go with Ubuntu. I have been using it for about 1 year now and had no issues. :)

Slackware runs smooth on my Pentium laptop with 16megs ram. Although if you are a Linux newbie this would be tough. Freebsd may be possible, it is very resource friendly and has excellent documentation.
