Ubuntu 7.04 (Linux) Wireless Connection Problem

Post icon  Posted 01 September 2007 - 08:32 PM

I just dual booted my machine for Ubuntu x64 7.04 and XP Home. There's this residential gateway in WPA security mode that I always connect to and memorize the required information. So I go into ubuntu and it recognizes my wireless card and is able to connect to other gateways that I have tested (and went to google and this site to make sure the internet worked). I thought it was cool but I really want to connect to the secure gateway I always do. I enter the info in and the key and the WPA-Personal type. It starts connecting but then it stops without even being able to connect to the router.

Here's the things I already have done to try and fix the problem:
- I tried all the other WPA settings (Personal2) and the automatic mode
- I ensured the correct MAC address was allowed in the gateway for my card
- I ensured the SSID and the key were correct, and tried them 4 times
- I ensured the gateway itself was working by testing it out in XP and on my laptop

Here's the type of card I am using:
Belkin Wireless 802.11g Desktop PCI Card

Any ideas here?

The card is good, its nice that it worked right off the bat, for me i had to just edit a few things in some config files and i was done (unlike damn SuSE.....piece of crap  )

anyways I know getting WPA to work is pretty difficult on linux, at least for me it was, so all i did was tune it down to WEP. im not too concerned with that because i don't think anyone in my neighborhood even knows what WiFi is, let alone how to crack WEP Keys. but then again if you suspect someone might try to gain access to your network and are scared to use WEP, I dont know, its a long and complicated process, i know it CAN be done but its really not worth all the hassle, considering someone can crack your WPA key in a couple of minutes as well.

I say just use WEP encryption, if not then i can research a little more and see how to get WPA with your belkin card, but im warning you, its not gonna be easy. :)

WPA PSK is easy, IMO. My personal network is an 802.11g network secured with WPA PSK, and I have two computers running Ubuntu and Gentoo Linux that can get on the network just fine.

WolfCoder: What chipset is your wireless card running? My desktop has a Linksys Wireless-G PCI card, based on the RaLink RT61 chipset, and if I want to do WPA, I have to go about it slightly differently. It's possible that your chipset has the same problem.
