Best way to store data in Metro style apps?

Posted 13 August 2013 - 09:47 AM

Hi,

I have some small C# apps that use Access local dbs to store data.
Now I am thinking on re-writing the apps and also to release Metro/WP7/WP8 versions.

The problem is I'm new to Metro and WP.
I did some research and found some similar threads on stackoverflow and it seams Windows 8 Metro style apps do not support connecting to a local database or Microsoft SQL CE for that matter.

So what are my options here? I basically need a way to store data on both, the desktop version of the app and the Metro version and, of course, to be able to easily CRUD entries.

Since I don't have much data to store (I doubt me or anyone will ever reach 1k entries, giving the nature of the app) my first choice for some of the apps was, as stupid as it may sound, XML but I gave up the idea since storying data in an (encrypted) XML file didn't seam the right thing to do.

Another suggested alternative was SQLite for Windows Runtime for Windows 8 Metro apps but I'm not sure this works with WP.

Any other idea?

But is it right to use it this way? For me this seams to be designed for storing settings not to act as a or replace a DB.
Besides this, I kinda need the DB to be portable so that I can transfer it between different versions of the app.

Ah.. so something like isolated storage?

sqllite

That or use a local file structure.. or a webservice and a host the db..
