And note, the "chasing your dreams" thing is a lot older than 40 years. My grandfather came to this country to "chase his dreams".
You've defined life. You've defined it as exercising, taking your dog to the park, and cooking for your girlfriend. Sounds like things YOU like to do to me. I'd hate to take my dog to the park, and I don't have or desire to have a girlfriend.
Have your own life and stop telling others their's don't add up to yours in "balance".

anyway, just saying, put the pickaxe (keyboard) down and do something else once in a while. DOESN'T SEEM THAT CONTROVERSIAL HONESTLY.
(also, work-life balance has never struck me as something you have a problem with, so taking the other side of it seems so... off)

I'm taking the other side of it because you're presupposing about these people who say such things.
You're defining for them what life is, then assuming they don't do such things, and thusly don't have work/life balance. Whatever the hell that is.
As I stated, what is to balance if your work is your life. Who are you to say one can't enjoy a life of work? Why do I need to walk a fucking dog?
[edit] - and sorry I edited my previous post before you posted that but I din't know you posted it.

My life is mostly work, and I like it that way. The only thing outside of work I really do is get drunk and sleep with random women (and sometimes men). It's hardly what I'd call the bright side of my life, it's the dark side that I should be squashing from my life. And my plan to do so involves starting a business... which is work.

My balance is that I do as work what it is I like. My work is my life, and I like that. And I'm positioning myself to increase what I like in my life.

I think this has mutated into a whole different debate. No one was trying to tell others how to live their life, as that was in fact the characteristic they were discussing.
The original point was aimed at people who state you're living your life wrong because you DON'T code 24 hours a day. People who do that, and enjoy doing that, are awesome and great for being so passionate. People who do it and try to put other people down for not doing it, are annoying, elitist and egotistical.
As b9 said, live and let live.

They all were related to the jobs I've had in my life. My work has brought me to all sorts of new and interesting places. My work... it's what I live for, because it gives me my life.
Including that google it tattoo!

Anyone who says if you don't code 24 hours is also an arrogant cunt.
But I'm talking about how there was a roll on how people who are "my life is coding" are sad or pathetic because they're life is their work and lack a balance between life and work.
Anyways, I've said my controversial malarky on here.

I didn't call anyone sad or pathetic (did I?). I said I feel sorry for them... because I can't imagine - nor do I WANT to imagine - living my life that way.
It seems in the great debate over controversial opinions, encouraging a work-life balance is more controversial than living, breathing, sleeping, and jerking off to code. A surprising turn, I think.
