Two routers, same house, different results

Posted 25 January 2014 - 05:53 AM

Hi guys

This has me a bit stuck.

My broadband is with Virgin Media, and their Superhub (in use for about a month) is actually a decent piece of kit considering the limitations.
Now I bought my Sitecom Gaming Router II a few years ago because all we were given was a modem, not Wireless, so we needed something.

It has been brilliant up until now, as I've been seeing a massive loss in connection speed, as well as random drop outs.

Playing with the router, I've changed the channel to 1, and width 20, to match Superhub, but the speeds I'm getting barely scratch half of what the Superhub kicks out. 10.05/1.19 to 33.32/3.05 (Down/Upload speed in Mbps).

Why is this?
Is there any way of improving the Sitecom more, or should I scrap it and use Superhub, or is there a better router out there?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

There could be a whole host of reasons it is faster.. setup was different, preferential treatment by the ISP, DOCSIS versions, firmware needs, frequency interference, hardware failing, etc..

So... yeah.. it's a little rough to discern what is going on when someone just says "one goes faster".

Wow, and here's me thinking it could have been a simple solution -.-

Shall I just stick with the "one that goes faster"? I think it could be because the router is outdated, that, and Virgin Media would like the control. All that was different is that Sitecom had reserved IPs for my devices, and special permissions for Xbox Live (ports opened only for my Xbox); the rest should have been identical.

For speed validations, I would not use wireless, I would use ethernet. Wifi is like voodoo, & you can't troubleshoot voodoo.

Windows, Linux, & Mac OSX all route traffic, & all the while using different tcp/ip stacks. Routers essentially are an embedded os, & their job is to route traffic. One manufacturer may just flash with something cheap & affordable & sell a $40 wireless router, while Cisco will specifically design, execute, & troubleshoot something that is so top end, it comes with certifications.

What is my point? If you REALLY want to troubleshoot their potential, you could look into DD WRT, flash the routers with the exact same firmware, & even further prove which one is faster. HOWEVER, you should make sure that they can even handle the os, as an extension of what is stated above, hardware manufacturer #1 could meet absolutely only the requirements to push traffic & manufacturer #2 goes above & beyond to provide a quality product.
