[Suggestion] - Restrict Share Your Project

Posted 06 March 2014 - 04:17 AM

Personally, I'm getting sick of being sold to on the share your project board. People are making these "Sell your product" posts with zero previous posts and they give zero information as to what is actually being shared. I don't get to learn what experiences were had whilst developing the program or what technologies they're using or what it's written in or anything. I'm just being sold to.

Can we have a marketplace type board where these people can pimp their apps instead? I think sharing a project is a little more involved than "Hey buy my program and try it out". This has been going on for a long time.

EDIT: I went on a rant and lost my train of thought. My original suggestion is to have a minimum post before you can post in share your project -- or again, a new marketplace board. Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

Can you post some examples of such threads, so we're all on the same page? I'm happy to bring this up in team discussion to flesh out the moderation logistics better. I will add that we've been moving the "Join my MMO for no pay" type threads to Share Your Project to clean up the Jobs forum.

We would welcome other input.

That brings up an interesting point.. though, have you tried peppering these posts with a few questions? See if they rise up to the topic?

Well, you are familiar with thirsty goose already:

and then there's:

http://www.dreaminco...pple-published/
http://www.dreaminco...t-skin-stealer/
http://www.dreaminco...d-shooter-game/

http://www.dreaminco...id-application/
(OK, how do you have 300+ posts and -7 rep?)

http://www.dreaminco...no-mix-machine/
(Hasn't made another post in over 2 months)

http://www.dreaminco...ng-yahoo-feeds/

http://www.dreaminco...world-to-enjoy/
(This is a great post in that it provides code so I do want to illustrate the exception to the problem of limited posts)

http://www.dreaminco...pdate-released/
(I tried to avoid any posts where you explicitly moved them but this person never said another word)

OK. So that's just page 1. And again, I did not make mention of the ones you moved. Anyway, I think that there are some simple ways to fix this.

First, require an img or code tag in the post. This way we will see either code of the project or screenshots of the project at least (well, except thirsty goose. They just included their company logo). I would even suggest requiring both.

Second, (and I know that the post I said above that was great would be disqualified) require as many posts as it takes to be able to edit your posts to post to share your project (I believe it is 10 -- that's not that hard if you really want to be a part of the community).

Third, if the only link is to play store or iphone store or whatever store then reject it. The only way we can give feedback is to buy the product, try it, and then comment. Who's doing that when it costs money? I bet it's rare enough to warrant such policy.

Others do and they have not responded for the most part.

From a moderation perspective, we're happy to clean up posts that are spam. Posts that are spam are generally posters that come to plug a "buy me" link, with little to add above what is featured on the app store. I'd also be okay with removing threads by drive-by members (no profile picture, first or second post, generic username types) with little more than links to generic or nebulous sites.

I'm not sure it warrants outright closing or deleting other non-spam threads. I certainly understand and empathize with your concerns about low quality posts. Perhaps some Share Your Project (and revised Post a Job) guidelines are in order, like we have in the other forums.

There is also the Feature button we can use, to instead draw attention to higher quality projects.

When in doubt on a thread, feel free to report it as well.

Sounds like reasonable solutions. Thanks.
