On that note- my boss told us he once had a math and poultry sciences double major. Clearly, combinatorics was her specialty.

If that was a joke, I think it laid an egg.

The part about combinatorics was a joke. He actually had such a student though double majoring in those fields.

Right. Clearly, the correct specialty for someone doing math and poultry science would be set theory.

Well let’s see, my evil boss just threw some kind of request at me. let me explain and id love to hear your comments:

First off im a research analyst, i get the data and analyze it, im not a programmer, but sometimes I have to write odd calculations Crystal Reports and in INFORMER.. no biggie

Im a student learning to do GIS, so I’ve got a little experience with Java, PythonScript, and VB and I said little

so she gives me this request to export student records from my student DBS into a .TRN file, and there’s this huge data dictionary with all kinds of requirements and fields. When I tell her I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do she asks me if I know what a database file is (OMG I almost lost it right them!) She tells me I’m just going to have to learn it and figure it out like she had to ( might i add she was the DBS admin), in the meantime I’ve got tone of other state mandated reports to submit. None of this was in my job description, I just want to run far from this evil red head!

Again im not a programmer and I do not know anything about SQL Server,

SO what would you tell her if she was YOUR boss? ANYTHING GOES!

Well, you've really got two choices. "Yes, boss, I'll have it for you as soon as I can" or "I quit".

Time to put on your big boy pants, bucko. It's a job. Do it.

@marinabl - Automation is the key to all reports.
for Learning SQL, I suggest:W3Schools

It is one the easier languages.

As far as job description: it is more like guidelines, if you check in the last part of the description there is always the "anything required by the company" clause. Take it as a learning opportunity, then if you still don't like your job; search for a new one with the new skills that you just acquired.

-1. The cluster of fail at w3schools is legendary. Stay clear.

I use w3chool as more of guidelines, ie syntax check. I still keep my copy of SQL Server 7.0 by Wynkoop by my desk.

Not a large fan of answering tech questions in the lounge, but here you go:

.trn -> transaction backup file

Backup:

A cursory se3arch of ".trn and mssql" popped up quite a bit.

Either this falls under "other assigned duties" (heh - I said duties), or you need to rebargin/define your position!

You all crack me up, thanks for the laugh

the red is real LOL eyes are black!!!!

I think ill refine my position, I'm a data analyst , data researcher, and I give statistics

My job is not a database administrator nor a SQL programmer, we actually have one of those and he's bored, hmmmmm!!!!!
, i believe that this scope is out of my range, and if she wants to fire me, oh well because when one door closes another one opens,
OMG 1 year away from my BS in GIS can't wait to make pretty pictures of the data instead of chasing it and explaining crap in crap out!!!

Doors open for those who put forth some effort and are interested in expanding their skill sets, not people who are complacent and play the "not my job" card.
