Ha macosxnerd101,
its like putting a dentist in a surgeons job and saying learn it quick you got surgery in 4 days!!!
Im not here to argue, I consider that putting forth the effort to draw the line of what I currently can and cannot do in a very short time frame is more of a logical approach!

Not at all. There are many folks who have picked up programming from books and practice. It sounds like you have a head start since you know some programming. You should view this as a challenge. Get as far as you can and ask for help when you need it. And if you're okay with losing your job, then it sounds like you have nothing to lose. If your degree is in information systems, you can expect more of these projects in your future career. Welcome to the real world. Whatever job you take, you'll have to learn some new skills and apply them. It sounds like your boss has been there.

First off im a research analyst, i get the data and analyze it, im not a programmer, but sometimes I have to write odd calculations Crystal Reports and in INFORMER.. no biggie

if you're a business analyst or an actuary or something similar, you should learn SQL anyway.

I'm gonna have to side with your boss on this one. Do you know what a database file is?

If you can do Crystal Reports you can do basic SQL. It's more like asking a carpenter who specializes in tables to make a staircase. You might have to sit down and figure it out at first but it's all data manipulation. I don't think it's an unreasonable request.

Your job is to do what you are told. You are given a pay check to perform tasks that allow the company to provide a service at a cost. Of course you have a specific comfort level & if you are asked to cross it, you can do one of three things.

See is as a challenge to better your skill set
Refuse to do the work
Leave the employer & go find another job

None of these options involve you re-educating others about your priorities, or your stance on... whatever.

It's certainly reasonable to talk to your employer about how her plan fits into existing priorities - but simply saying "I can't learn that in the time you're giving me" is very much like saying "I'm not the employee you thought you hired", which to me at least sounds a lot like "...so you'd be better off firing me and getting someone more suited to your needs."

I think ill refine my position, I'm a data analyst , data researcher, and I give statistics

My job is not a database administrator nor a SQL programmer...

I am classified as IT Support Specialist, I deal with Reporting and Data Analysis as well replacing obsolete programs and fixing / setting up computers and customer services.

Every Data Annalists I have talked over the years, always recommends learning SQL and the Appropriate Visual Studio Languages to do their jobs quicker and better.

As it is - a clay detailing kit (walmart, autozone, etc) will work to remove it.

Did I mention I was a student! :gunsmilie: SQL & SQL Server is on my list of classes. I’m not opposed to learning it at all, i just believe that the bored SQL programmer should be doing this, instead of giving me someone else’s job which impairs me from doing my assigned job duties, it takes time to learn this, and outside of this shitty job I actually have a life!

SHITTY JOB = This job hires you in at a VERY low low wage and keeps you there, doesn’t give anyone a raise.....EVER,(REALLY) and no advancement in pay even if you get a PHD in anything. Of course if you had a PHD you wouldnt be here in the first place! Yes I am looking elsewhere, and when you live in a tiny town work is hard to come by! This is why I’m going to school to move forward and get the hell out of here.

In any event thank you all for your responses.

Buy a house to hold all the little baby Pontiacs you will be having?! *squee!* Make sure you get a crest up, a giant portrait above one of the fireplaces, etc.
