I thought I'd share my project that I'm currently working on a bit, though put put back a bit as I wait for my new RaspBerry to arrive (I stupidly used my old one for a school exam project, so now it's stuck in that till I'm done) however it'll be nice to finally get a Rev 2 board.
What I'm trying to achieve is a media system for the TV I have in my room, I want to use it to watch movies, youtube videos and the like on with the TV, I also have the requirement for myself that it needs to be able to be controlled from various devices such as PCs, tablets, phones and so on, I also need it to be able to fetch or stream movies from my server at my old place.
For the technical parts I plan on running a Node.JS server on the Pi and with that I'll listen through WebSockets for real-time control commands, then I gotta figure out how to control the audio levels and maybe even channel switching on the TV itself (GPIO pins maybe?), however as I don't have a Pi to work with at the moment I haven't really gotten further than this.
So now, has anyone got any advice, recommendations or the like, and have any of you done any projects with a RaspBerry or other SoC board, I'm intrigued to hear about your projects and what you've managed to do.

I have a couple RPi units and was planning to do this too. Looks like XMBC is the way to go:

Seconded, XBMC is a great media solution - the range of addons and customizability is outstanding. I'm using OpenELEC on my Pi for XBMC and I can vouch for it.
I don't seem to be able to edit my post so I will add this... Raspbmc may be better suited to your use as it's got a full version of the Linux OS whereas OpenELEC is a minimal, lightweight and "just enough" distribution.
Edit: Hmm... I see new replies merge to my original post. Still new here.

Ahh, I was unaware of that actually, thanks for the tip, I'm not quite sure if I'm going to use XBMC or try to build up my own solution for the web controls, I'll definitely try it out at least.
