Laptops around 1k

Posted 08 May 2014 - 01:04 PM

So my wife wants a new laptop, but I'm not really sure what to get. It's a big commitment and I don't really want to make the wrong choice.

Here are the basics of what will be done with the laptop:

  • Basic web surfing: Facebook mainly (This really doesn't add much as any computer really can do it.
  • Some Gaming: (Does not need to be played at the highest setting, just needs to be able to run decent at medium settings)

I would also need the laptop to run Teamspeak 3 and Fantasy Grounds II

We've looked at the laptops at Best Buy, but I'm hesitant to get one with Integrated graphics as I've herd that those do not have the greatest quality.

My wife sent this one to me as one she would like, but again I'm unsure as to if it would be good enough or not.

Satallite P55T-A5118

I've looked at these, and they look great, but I haven't had much experience with the Lenovo brand.

Lenovo Y510p

Either look fine. The non integrated videocard would provide a better experience, but also more heat and sound. Everything else looks about on par with each other.. so I would check out reviews and looks.

Are there other brands/models you would suggest looking at? I'm trying to convince my wife to get away from just going to Best Buy as the Warranty alone would be nearly 1/3 the price of the laptop and to me that's just not worth it.

It gets pretty subjective, but my current standings: I dig toshibas, and not so much HPs. Sonys are expensive on name alone.. Dells are more or less 'meh'. I am not a fan of Acer, but do like Asus.

ok, would you say it's worth giving up an I7 to an I3 or I5 to get a better graphics card?

Though if you want to go overboard and grab a 'gaming laptop'. Mmmmmmm.. MSI G series.
