Anyone has experience on eCommerce platforms?

Posted 29 June 2014 - 12:46 AM

I'm going to make a shopping website for jewelry. I'm not sure which platform is the right choice for me.

- Can I trust this review? http://ecommerce-sof...tenreviews.com/

- Will people shop on my website if I don't use any of these platforms.
Or will they feel insecure about the payment system?

- What do you recommend?

That same site has a AV comparison that lists Norton at #3. - Maybe it's just me, but that would definitely be reason enough for me to close the tab and move on to the next Google result.

My recommendation: Do some real research into some of these platforms, and figure out which one has the features you need. Smart bet is that all of these kind of top product lists are skewed for marketing purposes.

I wouldn't pretend to know what will or will not cause people to trust or distrust your payment processing, but it's been my observations that most users neither know nor care about what is actually happening behind the scenes. As long as your site looks somewhat professional, they'll happily do whatever is asked to get their hands on whatever it is they want to be buying from you.

Thank you for your answer Atli.

As I dig deeper, there are 2 main ways to build an eCommerce site.

1. Hosted shopping carts (more user-friendly)
2. Self-hosted open source shopping carts (more advanced)

If I decide to use the second method, let say I buy this theme http://www.templatem...ates/49583.html

How much it's gonna cost me to hire a programmer to;
- install the theme on my web hosting
- change color and logo
- add more payment methods such as paypal, visa, mastercard, etc.
(I tried the demo it has only "cash on delivery method")

I know it's impossible to say how much it costs. I'm just trying to compare it to the price I would have to pay monthly to shopify.
