VB.NET Game Development - I Need Help With a 2D Game

Posted 01 July 2014 - 01:42 PM

Hello,

I have thought of and designed a game on paper. I have all of the components ready (Music, artwork, sprites, etc...) And I would now like to actually develop the game via VB.NET (don't say that VB.NET isn't good for games, I have a plan). Anyway so I wouldn't like to release to mush information but I will share the basics of the game:

You play as an object that must avoid all objects in the path of you. You move from left to right. There are different kind of objects that require different movements. The controls to move yourself to are < and >. The sky image stays still as the background and doesn't move. I also want to know how to create particles as well (such as flames following objects). Can you teach me this please?

Thank you.

Honestly VB.NET isn't good for games because of all the overhead, lacking a solid engine, etc. That being being said - you can eyeball the rudimentary engine I wrote up for this tutorial.

Hi,
I would also like to add that if you create a game with VB.Net then don`t make the mistake of using a bunch of PictureBoxes to show your sprites. It is much, much better to use the Paint event of the form to draw the sprites. It`s not only is faster but, it will not consume half as much memory.

You can also have a look at the link below for some good tips and info on creating games in VB.Net.

Thank you, both of you, Your tutorial is very helpful and I will use the paint event. And I was trying to use pictureboxes. Thank you.

If I where to make it in CSharp, would performance and flexibility be an issue?

Thanks

Hi,
I would say you can do pretty much the same thing in ether VB.Net or C#. It just depends on which one you prefer to code with in my opinion. B)

If you are looking into C# sharp, you might also look into Unity and XNA.
