Xgl is dead (SUSE 10.2)

Posted 11 October 2007 - 03:36 PM

OK so i changed the window manager to Xgl and rebooted and everything worked fine. I even disabled and reenabled it... all still fine. But when i went to install compiz-fusion i follwed directions on http://en.opensuse.o...l_on_SUSE_Linux
this page to a "T". and now there are no working effects... I then tried undoing everything i did... still nothing and now yast cant connect to important servers and hangs every time... i really dont want to re-install everything...

OpenSuse 10.2

When you say it won't connect to important servers, do you mean that is able to connect to some servers and not others?

Do you have yast set up to access the other servers and CD1? I never had a problem with that.
As for your installs hanging, OpenSUSE was really slow for me too. Give it a while.

well it doest really "hang" it keeps telling me it cant connect so i skip and then the connecting screen never goes away and so i try to just search and i cand even type into the box... is there anyway to use the suse repair to fix it? or maybe only reinstall X and yast?

Does this happen when you are trying to add software repos, or just install software?

Pretties!

More specifically; Most every ATi card has to use XGL to run Compiz or Compiz-fusion. XGL is probably the default in SuSE because XGL is Novell's compositioning server.

I think I had to turn XGL on, and I have an nVidia card anyway. I then urned XGL off again because it was painfully slow.

NVidia cards can use AIGLX, which is much faster.

I have always had problems with XGL and compiz. I never did manage to get beryl working. thats proably because I couldnt get the ATI drivers going, all I have currently is 2D acceleration, no 3D, im running ubuntu feisty but I have worked with suse on my other computer, suse works well with beryl but it just wouldnt go for me, I hope you have more luck.

Well if you can't get 3d rendering right, I don't think that compiz will run at all. Also; the default compiz installation on Feisty is a total POS. On UbuntuForums, there's a couple topics that will rip out the current Feisty compiz framework, and replace it with one that works. That's what I did when I had Feisty on my laptop. And it worked beautifully.
