How do you stay focuses when coding?

Posted 13 August 2014 - 03:19 PM

How do you stay focuses when coding? I sometimes start surfing the web for no apparent reason. Does any one have any drug free solutions? This video says it all.

It's part of being an adult. Self discipline.

There's the problem. Don't do that.

Wow. That guy is so not funny.

Anyway, yea. If you've got problems focusing for long periods, then don't try focusing for long periods. Code for 15 minutes, then get up and walk around or something for 5 minutes, then repeat. And make sure those 5 minutes are really away from the computer; don't go browsing for 5 minutes, because it will always end up being more than 5 minutes.

Also, if you really lack the willpower to stay on task, you could always edit your hosts file so your favourite time-wasting sites (facebook, reddit, dic, whatever) redirect to localhost. Remove the temptation.

I code for about an hour then move around or do some research on the current or known problem. We also have a pingpong table to relax with.

I tend to focus for about 20-30 minutes, then distracted myself with DIC for 5-10. Helps clear my brain so I don't keep coming at issues with the same non-answer. Alternatively I'll sketch out what I'm working on

When I'm programming if I've been doing it for at least an hour I'm lasered in and I won't stop, but if I can't seem to get into a flow I normally program for about 45-60 minutes then I get up and walk around (away from the computer!) for about 3-5 minutes get a drink, maybe a snack, then get back to the grind.

I don't really know how long I can code for cause I usually just keep going for most of the day haha. But I do take breaks during sessions, so it's not like I'm staring at a screen the whole time.
But yeah, it's more so about self discipline. But that doesn't mean forcing youself to code for a set period to the point where it's straining and giving you a headache. Taking as many breaks in between as necessary ultimately helps with your focus in the end, even if it's just walking to the kitchen and back.

I tend to drink a cup or two of coffee and take a five minute break every thirty minutes.

I'm trying to cut down on my caffeine consumption so when I get up I have just one cup of coffee, and I like to have another cup of coffee with my breakfast, and on my way to work I like to get a cup of coffee - I like the kind of coffee that you get with a donut so when I get a donut I get a cup of coffee, and when I get to work I like to have a cup of coffee cause I like to have a coffee when I'm talkin on the phone and when it gets a little cold I like to have another cup of coffee and then it's lunch so I have an espresso.

I take short breaks, like 5 to 10 minutes after coding for around 15 to 30 minutes. Whenever I really like the project/ assignment though, I take hourly breaks instead. xD
