check if the email is not fake.

Posted 26 August 2014 - 11:48 AM

i used eregi() function to check if the email is fake or not,but i think it's not a good way for checking the email and it's not always useful.
is there another way?or should we use eregi()?

thanks for your help!

You can check if an email address adheres to a certain pattern; however, you cannot check whether or not an email address exists (ie., is fake). You can require email validation of the account before you activate it; however, there are sites that provide disposable and temporary accounts.

Some of these appear in the stopforumspam database, so it's a possibility you could query the stopforumspam database and check if it's in there as well, this may help slightly with validation.

But again, it's not 100% accurate as they may or may not exist.

Also it's better (quicker, server efficient) to validate the email on the client side with jQuery.

Let the client browser do the work, & know that the value you get back is validated. Rather than getting results, validating, & then sending data back.

Stop using eregi period. Look at the manual page. See the red box? It's been deprecated as of version 5.3.0. And using regex for email address validation is folly anyway. Use filter_var with the FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL flag.
