Unable to install GUI in Ubuntu Server

Posted 08 September 2014 - 08:18 PM

Hey, so I just started industrial training yesterday, and one task I was given was to install Ubuntu Server 12.04 in VirtualBox. I have to admit that my prior knowledge in Linux was basically restricted to home use, and I'm kind of unused to using a command line interface for the majority of the time, and I looked around and tried to install a GUI.

So far, whenever I try to install it using apt-get, I would usually get this error:

I've tried other GUIs such as Unity and Gnome core but the problem remains. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

My first thought, skip the gui. My other hat at the office is to pretend I know what I am doing as a sysadmin. GUI's drain to many resources and are rarely used in a professional environment. Command line is faster, cleaner, and less wasteful.

Since you will read and ignore that in favor of convenience, here.

I've edited the /etc/apt/sources.list file in vim, saw that the Universe and Multiverse repos were enabled, and I even enabled these:

After saving it, I ran apt-get update again, and tried re-installing it a GUI, but I got this:

I get the reasons, but I'm still unused to using a CLI right now, and a GUI will make it slightly easier for me.

And this is the whole /etc/apt/sources.list file, maybe it'll help:

And when I tried to install xorg I received this message:

You will only become familiar with the CLI if you use it. Skip the GUI, learn to use the machine correctly.

As already stated if you want to work with a "server' then you should forgo the GUI and stick with the command line. But if you insist on using a GUI you probably don't want the "server" distribution of the operating system. This distribution normally comes without the GUI and installing it can be a pain, go with one of the "desktop" distributions, you'll probably need to install some of the required "server" components.

I've never been fond of Ubuntu as a server anyhow. If you want a server with apt-get, use Debian. & others have stated, GUI is desktop, servers are generally headless & without GUI.

If you absolutely need a GUI, you can go with something like Webmin, cPanel, or Plesk

I have to agree that ubuntu server was not meant to have a GUI, and you should become good with a terminal. However, I think the easiest way to install a GUI would be to use tasksel.
sudo apt-get install tasksel

sudo tasksel
