Apache webserver not starting.

Posted 02 November 2014 - 04:40 PM

Hi, maybe you guys can help me out. I'm running Xampp1.8.2-6 on my Macbook Air running the Mavericks operating system.

Yesterday it was working fine but now it doesn't work. It's not running.

I go to manage servers on the Xammp app and it won't start Apache. I can't access my files without Apache running. When I type "local host" in the browser, it just says "It Works". Yesterday it brought me to a page where I could edit my security settings, start databases and see the files in my htdocs folder.

Do you guys know what could be wrong? It worked just fine yesterday..

Moved to the Web Servers & Hosting forum. This is not a PHP issue.

That's odd. If Apache isn't running, how can it be saying anything?

I believe that version of OSX actually has a built in Apache version. Perhaps that's interfering, blocking your XAMPP instance of Apache.

Try opening a command line, and doing one of these commands:
sudo apachectl stop
sudo service apache stop
sudo /etc/init.d/httpd stop

# I wouldn't exactly recommend this one,
# but it's worth a try if all else fails.
sudo killall httpd

If it works anything like some of the major Linux distros, one of those might work.

Thanks. Turns out

sudo apachectl stop
worked. I guess the one pre-built in the system was interfering. Thanks.

Great. Glad there was a simple solution.
I hate going through Apache logs and config files looking for trouble :)

Based on the description, you had an apache process still binding to port 80. When you tried launching through the 'start' button, it couldn't bind as the port was already bound. Thus you could see a page on localhost despite the interface showing that the service was stopped.

Glad you got it figured out.
