Who's Gettin' an EEE?

Post icon  Posted 23 October 2007 - 01:06 PM

So I've been following the developments of the Asus EEE PC fairly closely, the first public release was the 16th but it's set to be in the US in the next 3 weeks or so.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the EEE is a ultra-portable notebook from Asus with a 7" LCD, solid state hard drive preloaded with Linux (Windows XP Compatible apparently) along with some other innovative features. All for the insanely low price of $249 USD ( for the 4GB version)

Who's gettin' one?!

Not to seriously knock it or anything but any device they show kids under 10 playing on is probably not going to be that kick ass to a geeky power user like myself. Other than maybe the solid state hard drive I don't actually find the device all that appealing. But then again I am probably not in their target audience. This looks good for the general public who knows a little about computing but wants to get down with some general features. Send a message, talk on skype or whatever.

One thing about it though is that they claim it is great for multimedia work like video and files and stuff, but at 8 gigs (on their biggest model) you can't store much.

Maybe I am missing something. :/

That is the largest pocket pc I've ever seen. At that price, I'll consider getting one!

I'd rather have a 12.1" Lenovo ThinkPad X61s. If we're talking really small notebooks here. Dump Gentoo Linux on there, and I'm set. :)

Spend a couple grand too.

For geeks this would be more of a novelty or toy then anything.

For example, you could use it for the exclusive purpose of surfing porn, or hook it up to an HDTV for a tiny multimedia PC for playing movie files and music...

Ahh so it can be the little dirty porn pc that no one knows about. Now I see its value! And here they had me all fooled with the little kids playing on it on their website. They should of had some hot chicks mud wrestling for it instead.

:D

Hm, might be something I look into if I have any extra loan money at the end of the semester. Something I noticed though, with it running Linux, do they ever say what flavor of Linux it comes with? Granted I would probably end up reloading it with Dream Linux, but this is just a curiosity question since I couldn't seem to find it on their site.

It appears to be a custom distro designed for the computer but I don't know a lot about Linux perhaps it's based off something...

That looks like the answer to the old Velo 1 I loved back in the day.
A pda that would do what I need with out needing a laptop.

It looks like it would be a good machine for teenagers, kids just starting high school who need something do there assignments on.... I alternate between wanting one because they are so cheap and the geek in me can't resist that... but in the end, the screen is small the drive is small and the misses probably doesn't want more geek toys in the house.

engadget was excited about it
i think the specs were slightly less than expected
but the EEE2 should be nice.

i think it would be great for toting around campus.
i don't do much more than email and the basics there but more than i want to do on a phone or pda.

It'll be a good competitor to http://laptop.org/en/laptop/ and http://www.intel.com...ad/classmatepc/

Yeah, this notebook wasn't designed with 3rd world countries in mind like the OLPC. However, according to an article I read, an unnamed government did order 1 million of the EEE pc's so they have caught the interest of government use at least.
