Talking to my boss about integrations and how much time is acceptable for the process to run. Currently it takes ~10 seconds to do the following, when given a list of files

The company brought in lunch for everyone. I still haven't been able to log in to their new system. Zero productivity day.

I've spent all day fighting with KafkaConsumer in version 0.8.2. It turns out that it isn't fully implemented: http://stackoverflow...-of-kafka-0-8-2

At that point, it's easier to use a laptop and just connect to whatever monitors are available.

Well that's what I do, of course, but fetching out keyboard and sundry other gear is a loss of time every morning. More important, it's a loss of momentum - no matter how ready I am to get started, I have ten minutes of bullshit before I can even start on things. And at the end of the day, I have more of the same. When I can't just pick up my machine and leave, it's more friction in my day.

At a guess, they wanted to "not be corporate, man." That's what that sounds like to me. "Nah dude, we're not a cubicle farm, we don't even have assigned desks. Just grab a computer and go, man."

Kinda that. Mostly it's about not having enough space, and having people who travel a lot, so it does give a bit of flexibility in that regard. The problem is, if you work at a computer all day you really need to set it up to fit you correctly. I see these people hunched over a laptop all day, and I can't bear to think of how messed up their backs are going to be in a few years.

That's one of the most ridiculous office "solutions" I've heard of.

Tell me about it...

Listening to office politics. A more ambitious group manager is lobbying to get her own IT staff outside of our IT department. Our CIO is not happy.

I am currently working on Phase 2. I should have API Specs tomorrow, so the real bulk of the work will begin after that. I got an email from the TPV asking for Sketches or Screenshots of how we will be displaying the data they provide us to the user. My initial reaction is exactly why do you care? I wouldn't think it would matter how we display the data. Plus we won't have any of that until we know what the data looks like coming from them.

Vacation coming up the 6-11th. That will be fun. Going to Chattanooga and then on to Atlanta. Going to do the Tour De Aquarium, as well as the Bottling plant. Apparently they give tours there and the wife really wants to go see them put coke into bottles.

I have to ask - why?

It's always boggled my mind how things like this even come about. I mean, I can see it if you're local. If the Jim Beam plant had offered tours, I'd have gone to take a look. But I can't imagine, when assessing your vacation options, saying "you know what sounds like a lot more fun than going hiking in the mountains, relaxing at the beach, Broadway, or Vegas? Seeing how coke is bottled!"

I mean, it's like the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. Why do people go to that? I mean hell, at least there's some vague historical context to things like Plymouth Rock.

I'm just wondering what alternatives you gave up, and how you guys determined that this was better.

I don't mean to sound like a dick but I'm sure I do. I truly can't wrap my head around the decision.

The wife wants to do it, and I suspect he knows better than to argue.

A lot of places get side travel traffic too, which I am betting the twine thing is. On the way to a marriage retreat out to New Mexico, there were signs all over about this alien thing at a gas station. We didn't go, but I knew several that did see what crap they were pushing at the "gift shop."

We like to watch the show How It's made which is part of the reason she wants to go. The wife has always had a fascination for the "Behind the scenes" type of thing. She's always curious what went in to making things. Honestly, I'm a little excited to see the assembly line as well. One of the things I remember the most about my childhood is going to the Mail processing center and watching mail being sorted by machines. We really didn't give up anything in order to go to the bottling plant.

It isn't about being better, but different. I can go hiking, camping, fishing, etc. anytime where I live. When I go on vacation I want to do and see things I wouldn't normally get to see or do, yes including the worlds largest ball of twine. (It's actually pretty impressive when you get up close to it.) If you want to get technical though the worlds largest ball of twine is in Kansas, but the one in MN is impressive just because it was done by a single man instead of by a large group. If you really wanted to you could go to the one in Kansas and add to the ball, but that's getting off the subject a bit.

.. because Road Side Attractions kick ass. Someone, some time ago, decided that right at that spot to build/showcase a thing and through out the years people have congragated there to marvel at said thing. A collective kick to the old school wonderment of being on the open road, seeing things over the next horizon, and being amazed (abet for a brief period) of the bizarre. Wall Drug, Carhenge, Honest Abe's giant head on a pillar, The Mystery Spot, Ames Brothers Pyramid, the Giant TeePee, and so on.

Gosh darn Jackalopes, man! JACKALOPES!
