My boss, whom could be looking over my shoulder and still not know what I do, does not like me working from home because he can't prove that I am working.

I've done my share of working from home. It's a lot more fun to be in a room with other people, I think. Conferencing tools are nice and all that, but you get a much better feel for where things are at if you're on location. (I know, I'm old-fashioned - I prefer the real world...)

If I can get brushed up fast enough(~ 3-4 years since any REAL development in VB or C#), I am heading to the .NET side of things.

I'm so sorry - you have my condolences. (though I can understand the urge to get away from the PHP... "not PHP" was definitely one of the requirements for the most recent job search.)

I don't work totally from home, probably in the area of 5- 15 hours a week on average.

He and I have spoke before regarding what I am actually doing. Because unlike the graphics guy, you cant visualize what I do (especially if you don't understand what I do). The way the graphics guy explained it to him, if our sites are up and running, and they work how the clients want, he is doing his job.

We have dedicated unmanaged servers. He thinks if we throw a site on the server it magically works. Not that it has to be updated, patches installed, if a site goes down I am notified (via the server) and working to get it back up or clustered so it isn't an issue.

Really it is what it is. He is stressed and doesn't understand the business well enough to know what he is getting in return. Oddly enough, I replaced 3 different people that HAD no clue what they were doing. Could not maintain a system, but were good talkers. And my first few months were spent cleaning up their piles-o-crap code spread across several systems.

Today is a wash.
  • I started 2 hours late because my kids' school had a delay.
  • Spent most of my morning having an asinine email conversation about a calendar that is out of my realm of assistance.
  • Had part of my lunch.
  • I have a "Website Task Force" meeting in 15 minutes.
  • And then we're shutting down early because the weather is shitty.

Total productivity: zero, zilch, zip, nada.

Books are better than YouTube tutorials as well. Those damn whippersnappers don't know how to get 'er dun nowadays.

I literally just suggested a company hackathon...

I don't think my company has them, but I know the client I work for does, but contractors aren't welcome. :( I have one next weekend through school though.

At home sick. Just woke up. Been sick all weekend. x___x. pewp.

The GTA for the class I'm TAing finally got her work visa! So I don't have to grade 65 homeworks.

Today, I'm working on my last blog entry migrating my linear algebra notes. Then I'm going to work on data analytics homework. That's all the remaining homework I have this week.

Just got back from seeing The Imitation Game. That's about the worst heap of shit I've seen in ages. I don't think they went three minutes in that movie without getting at least one important fact completely screwed up.

Everyone at Bletchley knew that Turing was gay, there were hordes of people there working on code breaking, many of them women, there was a lot of very successful manual decryption, Turing didn't just sort of walk in and say "I'm going to make a machine to fix these things", there was a lot of work on mechanical decryption before he got there, Turing was not some sort of autistic child with an obsession with separating his food, nor was he in some way in love with his computers, none of which incidentally was named after Christopher Morcom, and by the way, would not have fit into his or any house of the day, nor would they have been capable of running on mains current in 1951... those are just the first ones that come to mind. Oh, and there was no question of whether the Manchester police knew about the identity of the burglar, because Turing told them, and there was no question that they knew of the sexual relationship with Murray, because again, he told them. There was no inquisitive Manchester cop looking for a Russian spy, and the police officers who arrested him didn't turn out to be decent chaps just trying to protect their country in the end. Everything about that movie was pure fiction, apart from the names.

It wouldn't be so bad, but they had the gall to say it was "based on" Hodges' biography, which clearly nobody involved with the production ever even glanced at, except maybe the index. Why did they bother to make this movie, if they weren't going to even try to get anything about the man's life right? I mean, leaving out everything interesting that he ever did, that's one thing, but even taking just the three episodes that they focused on, they simply got everything wrong about each of them. That takes some dedication.

I've only ever been able to test one at a time, so I could never get in to QA testing

Snagged an excellent pair of seats to a Stage Right production of Sweeney Todd (yay! :bananaman:) for Françoise and myself later this month. And working on getting content into a new site so I can launch the bastard this week.
