I'm sitting at the dealership getting a new battery put in my car. Apparently because the computer sits on top of the battery no one will touch it. At least the dealership is charging me decent rates. Also found out there is a power steering "quiet recall" on my vehicle. Basically they are not announcing it, but they put a 100% warranty on it for 120k miles or 10 years.

@rgfly - if you don't mind me asking, what's your ride/whip/wheels? It sounds super odd to have anything sitting on top of the battery being they need to be fairly accessible.

My old roommate had a Cadillac, and just one of the many pains in the ass about it was that parts of the engine meant to be accessed regularly were intentionally blocked off to require special tools to get at. The battery had the housing for the computer over it, the oil (valve? the port) was a pain in the ass to access and was sideways, so you couldn't just pour oil in.

Made me damn sure I'm never buying one. I'm not very mechanically inclined, but the price on everything from replacing break lights to changing the oil was over an hour $150 and he had to take it to a mechanic who had all the tools to get at his car. Most places didn't have them. Utterly ridiculous.

modi most new chrysler's have the batteries located behind the passenger or driver tire-- so you have to remove the tire to get to it

The Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice had the WORST battery location of ANY car...

The battery is held on the (been a while ) I want to say drivers side front fender well. You have to remove the fender, replace the battery, the realign the fender. Outside of dealerships most places wouldn't touch them,

(I used to be a mechanic too.)

Actually, the jump starting wasnt an issue. It had posts that you could connect to for that. I think it was a Cadillac SUV that had the battery under the passenger seat. Free seat warmer!

Yea come to think of it his car had posts to jump it, and they were in a weird spot. I only found all this out because we went to take a road trip after he hadn't driven his car in like 9 months and the battery died - I called AAA out to jump start it.

Keep an ear out folks.. with Radio Shack imploding with grace and finesse I am curious if their DIY electronics will hit on sale (or even actually on sale-sale). I may have to go raid a few stores to hoard up on bits and buttons. Anyone else sniffing around this carcass?

I've been wondering when they would go under. I can't think of anything I'd really want from them though. Maybe some more rechargeable batteries...

I may swing by it later and see what they've got. Gotta admit, I'm curious.

I'm rolling in a Chevy equinox. The battery is right at the front next to the driver headlight assembly, but the computer it's ontop of it. Apparently if you don't remove it just right, you can trip the automatic lockout which will make the car unable to start.
