Game Design Books?

Posted 28 January 2015 - 08:38 AM

Any good suggestions on MMO game design books? I have been looking around Amazon and came across a couple but I was curious if anyone else had some good suggestions. I have a pretty good handle on my multi-player game, but I want to ensure I cover all my bases.

Some of the books I have considered buying include:

Any thoughts on those or suggestions for another book?

Thanks!

That first book looks like a solid design book.

Cool thanks modi123_1, I placed an order for that one. I am hoping it has a checklist of things to do, I work better with list than coming up with things ad-hoc. I would love it if blizzard would release their system level requirements to see how they planned out WOW at a high level.

No prob. The index looked pretty expansive.

Wouldn't that be the other way around? Typically the high level helps direct the hardware needs.

I don't know of any good MMO game design books, but it's rare I buy such books (out of date as soon as they're printed, expensive, and too many - I would buy them all).

I like books that lead you down a development process, so it teaches you how to do one thing, and then move on to the next feature.

For instance, for a Uni project, I created a simple horror/adventure game (based of Amnesia), and that grew with new features as development progressed, such as leaderboards/timescores, online chat, and even a multiplayer cat and mouse/build-up tig (one player was the monster).

Those two books do look like they'd be helpful (I would definitely consider the first), as it looks at the methodology, but also read some game dev blogs and articles online and get other people's opinions.
Everyone is different and have different development patterns.
