Posted 28 January 2015 - 12:32 PM

Hallo, some help over here plzzz

I have been asked to Install "Elasticsearch" and Learn the basic API commands like how to store docs (records) and basic search options. I need the API commands to be coded with Ruby, Using the elasticsearch gem (library).
Can someone please elaborate on the API part, and as matter of fact )-: everything you people can contribute to me accomplishing this task would be greatly appreciated!!!!! (-:

I have no idea where to start (no exp with ruby at all) , total blackout over here. I have tried to starting ruby tutorials, but I will never finish in time… if I'll ever will lol

love some help,
thanks

We're not going to be able to do your task for you. You're going to have to practice Ruby to learn it.

Your post is confusing - you say you need to learn the APIs, but then say you need the APIs to be coded in Ruby. Are you learning APIs or writing some code? In order for us to elaborate on any API part, you'll have to clarify what you actually need to do. If it's exploration and learning, nothing's going to beat firing up "irb" and running some simple commands.

Have you looked up 'Elasticsearch tutorial'?

If you don't know ruby / won't learn ruby, and you need to know how to use something in ruby, you are going to have a bad time.

its for a Interview, and i cant figure out the Elasticsearch connectio, To be specific i need to:

a. Save 5 docs, with 3 keys, first_name, last_name, email_address – one of the docs will store your details.

b. Search for the doc with your name (by first_name).

c. Print the results (the values) on the screen – you can save the results with array or hash and then print them as part of string for example “My name is: ...".

I know my question is a bit blurry lol, got a bit over my head. try to helpl still please

You need to give us something to work with - I don't expect anybody to hop in and give you the code for these. What have you tried? Are you getting errors?

I have no experience with ruby, I have been programing in java for the last 2 years, and never herd off elasticsearch gem.
There for I don’t need a straight answer / to do list. I was hoping to get at list a direction to where stars looking for info in this jam, and be as precise as I can.

You go to their website. They explain how to install, where to find the full documentation, etc.

There's more than one gem for elasticsearch, so you'll have to pick one. There is no magic bullet to learning Ruby. Any of the tutorials are good, but if there were one that somehow got you the knowledge you needed in less time, wouldn't it be the only tutorial? You've just got to start one and stick to it.

Wait - you haven't been to the website of the product you are trying to use?

What search terms were you using? Mine - 'Elasticsearch tutorial ruby'.

Am I the only one who thinks this is sketchy we're helping someone on an interview for a job where they should already know how to solve these things?

I think a fair question to ask is whether this person is claiming to already know Ruby and Elasticsearch to a prospective job, hence the urgency. I figured since the best advice is to actually learn the stuff rather than looking for answers, our response needn't really change, but I think you're right, and this topic doesn't really seem to have value. Closing.
