Algoritmic Logic problems training ?

Posted 08 April 2015 - 08:12 AM

Hey guys :D
I'm 16 ,I currently know C# and I would like to learn how to solve common problems making my mind an advantage in this . But I can't find a book about it ...

I would like to solve kind of problems like :

Quote

There are a bunch of kids waiting in a queue in a canteen , find how many kids can watch the canteen depending on their heights .

Yeah this is easy but I just wanted to mention what kind of problems . Logic Problems ! .
For example in this problem I mentioned, you have to find that you have to record the biggest height everytime and see if the kid is bigger than that, if it is he can see to the canteen .

Or a problem I still didn't solve :

Quote

There are 3 brothers :
They work in their father's job consecutively while they do not work exactly the same hours every day .

So, having in mind that they work consecutively, and not the same hours, the share will not be exactly the same everyday but it must be as fair as possible and the very favored brother must have the less possible money (less possible of maximum)

I want to be able to solve that kind of problems fast and learn the logic of problem solving .

The question is :
Should I just train on these without any help of any kind of book or is there any kind of tutorial-book that I can read to achieve what I want ?

Side set of questions - What's a 'canteen', why would folks "queue" for it, and why would their height determine watching this 'canteen'?

A 'canteen' in Britain is:

a restaurant attached to a factory, school, etc, providing meals for large numbers of people
or
a small shop that provides a limited range of items, such as toilet requisites, to a military unit

I'm not sure about the height issue, maybe it is to see if one person can see over the top of another persons' head(?).

Okay - that's what I thought, but the whole "how many kids can watch the canteen" threw me off.

Firstly ... Posted Image

This is a canteen ...
Secondly ...
Why the only two times I asked something on this forum the first comment were completely irrelevant from my question ?

I mean come on guys ... I asked something, at least say "I don't know the answer to your question but [...] ... this is completely annoying when happens and very rude to me ...

Considering the canteen now, look at the picture and imagine a bunch of kids waiting in a line, some bigger than other, so some of them can't see the canteen in front of them .

Hey sport - this is a volunteer forum. Folks are free to comment as they do. I was not clear on the jibber-jabber being tossed around and asked. Let's not crawl up my bum for being inquisitive.

Then don't take it as rude? Counter point, buddy, I perceive it as rude that you assume 100% of the replies must be hammering a solution out of the ether for you. Volunteers are not your problem solving monkeys.

As jon.kiparsky would say - chillax. I was just asking clarification on an unfamiliar colloquialism.

You misunderstood me ... I never told that you are "my solving monkeys" ... or that when I post something someone has to answer to me immediately like I am some kind of a subscriber that pays for answers or a king .
I said that when I'm asking something on this forums, the two times I tried to get an answer I had to ask 2 times for it . Everytime someone was stuck on something I wrote and not on the main topic, and ignoring completely the main topic without even saying "I don't have any book to recomment you..." drives me crazy .

At don't make it look like I'm the dumbass please, because what I said just now, you could read again my comment and understand it from there, instead of making me a whole paragraph about it . As I said before you could say "Sorry I could not answer your question..." , I never talked about Solving monkeys, you did .

And I appreciate anyone's help or post,
but at least please don't ignore completely my main question, just take my position, you come to a forum to ask something, and a bunch of people post 5 replies about something completely irrelevant and you're like "The heck ? Why are they talking about it ? My whole point was something else ..." . It's like completely ignoring you and no one likes it, even you .

I'd pick up a Discrete Math textbook like Epp, Johnsonbaugh, or Rudin and work through it. In particular, I would start with logic, set theory, and number theory. These are good subjects to train your brain for creative/logical problem solving.

As Modi said- chillax. Go with the flow some. This is a community where folks are free to comment as they see fit. Don't get so worked up about it. ;)

Thank you very much buddy :smile2: :smile2: :smile2:

Thank you also for your point, I think you're right, I must chill . It was just kinda annoying because I'm not used to ignoring my questions in a forum that usually were the only thing someone saw on one another forum I used to write, or they just didn't answer . Considering that, it wasn't appropriate for me "ignoring me" .

Sorry I was just used to another kind of behaviour . My apologies to you and to modi123_1 plus andrewsw.
