Building a New Comp

Posted 13 November 2007 - 01:51 PM

Case
Motherboard
Processor
Video Card
Power Supply
HD
RAM

I have already convinced my parents that for my birthday/christmas i want a computer. The only problem is that im not 100% sure i have everything correct. I've checked for :
  • Checked that the Processors socket type is correct(LGA 775)
  • Checked the form factor of the Motherboard and the Case are the Same
  • The PSU is a 20+4pin, so would that work for a 20 pin socket(look at bottom of post for other details)*
  • The video card is PCI-e x16 and so the motherboard has a slot for it
  • The ram is DDR2 667(PC 5400) same as the mobo
  • PSU is ATX12V, would that fit in a standard ATX form factor case?

*The PSU is 20+4pin, but im pretty sure that it means it can be 20 or a 24 because the 4 pin is detachable.
Im sorry im asking this, but I really want to know if all this would be compatible and if I missed anything. I dont want to order everything to find out is doesnt work

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

One potential problem I see is that your motherboard is a MICRO ATX while your case is a full tower that supports ATX boards. Before buying your case you better make sure that the case has predrilled holes for a micro ATX board. My guess is that it doesn't so you may need another case. Everything else looks like it will work together.

Good luck with the project. :)

hmm... I always thought that uATX was backwards compatible with the ATX form factor, just using a subset of the ATX mounting points. Let me check this out, and I'll get back to you...

*edit - I'm back. According to wikipedia, the micro should mount fine in an ATX case, so it looks like it should work. Someone correct me if this is wrong.

However, for expansion purposes, you make want to go with a full ATX board, especially something with more memory slots. With that MB, you wouldn't be able to increase the memory without actually getting rid of your old sticks (only 2 slots, and you're filling them both).

Well I stand corrected. I was sure that I had a full tower once that a micro wouldn't have fit into. Either way it would look silly to have this tiny mobo in a full tower.

Knowing this now, you should be all fine ferrari. I wasn't completely sure but I thought I would have him double check just in case. Thanks for the clarification jjhaag. :)

Thanks, I ordered the parts and just got a different case. I don't care if it looks small, I have a mid/Micro tower(its like a combination) and it just sucks because i have a regular size ATX board and its impossible to work with. there is about 1-2 inches between the mobo and the FARTHEST side of the case. Its such a tight squeeze that if I take something out, i have to take other parts out. To get to the power supply, I have to get rid of the mobo and CD drives. It just sucks. well...thanks so much for the help
