windows is like a ford explorer. everybody and their uncle's got one, but do you really want to take the risk of having your tires eplode out from under you just because SUV's are everywhere?

limux is like the nifty little euro car that can do 200 mph and only conk out if you take a sledge hammer to the motor.

Nah if you take a sludge to linux it will still run. I had to choose BSD because it is everything linux espires to become.

yea, what was that quote in the red hat installer talking about linuxl... "would you buy a car with the hood welded shut" i think that pefectly describes them. with linux, you get to go in, tinker around, fix it to your liking, in windows, if its broke, your screwed.

Well they both are unix clones, BSD was developed at UC Berkley from the remnents of varous other unix systesms (the GNU project among others, while Linux was developed mostly by a group of programmers around the world via the internet, it was based on top of minux a small freeware OS. THe differences are subtle in they way that the user can notice as they both run roughly the same suite of tools, but the cores vary... There are some people the sware by Linux, and some that sware by BSD but they are roughly the same...

Cheers Sam :)

win xp all the way
M$, maybe they are monopolising the market
but windows XP is very fast on my 800mhz Pentium - III

Plus u guys probably dont know this, but windows codename longhorn and windows codename blackcomb will be coming out soon

Windows Longhorn will be like windows ME, it will have small adjustments and alot of new stuff for windows XP, it will be like an addon. Windows blackcomb will have the bar along the bottom of the screen, JUST like linux
it will use a new version of the JET database engine, probably version 7 or something (winxp is version 4) AND it will have a fully integrated 3d windows interface. meaning, when you come into windows, you will be able to place windows your not using on the walls of the room, windows you are using u just double click and they fly onto the screen. There is a video of this somewhere on microsoft.com but im not sure where. Anyways, windows is the OS of the future, maybe not now, but probably tomorrow. Linux may have some neat features, like playing an MP3 when you mouse-over (simple coding) but does Linux automatically start to defragment your disk when you dont use your comp for 5 mins, then automatically stop if u touch the mouse? all without popping up a window? Each OS is better in their own certain and special way. Neither is better, neither is worst.

^ very very early version of blackcomb

http://ascii24.com/n...s635677.gif.htm

^ windows codename Tiger (now longhorn) this is what computing will look like in the future

I like Windows XP.

It is the best, IMHO. You can customize its themes.

Linux is a GPL licensed kernel project begun by Linus Torvalds. Most Linux installations use the GNU toolset, which is also licensed under the GPL for the most part. The BSD's are all derivatives of the BSD licensed operating system (not just a kernel) started at Berkeley. The three major BSD branches are NetBSD (the most portable), FreeBSD (the best for x86), and OpenBSD (the most secure after installation).

I use and like Win 2K best, but mainly because it has so many apps available and is the most stable of all the Win systems I have used. It still has stability issues, though, especially how I flog my system, and diagnosing the one bad app, driver or registry key bringing the system down is damn near impossible. If I could get my favorite apps on Linix or Unix, just the ability to unload programs and remap memory at will without having to restart and reinstall every two months would be worth it. Pretty much need at least two running systems with Windows to prevent downtime. Unfortunately, I can only afford one right now. :(
