Sudden Death

Posted 14 November 2007 - 10:45 AM

Here's the problem, and the bugger seems to be an USB port.

the PC restarts 50% of the time when i plug in my nokia n72 via a data cable or my transcend 4 gb pendrive, and after restart the system gives a warning that it has recoverd from a serious error.

my PC is really clean atm, since i just reformatted it a week ago and i havent messed anything up(im sure of that), i reinstalled the drivers for the USB controller but the problem still persists.

also this happens only in the FRONT two USB ports which are connected to the motherboard via a cable. not the ones directly mounted on the motherboard.

also is there ANY way that i might be able to interpret the error report included in the data log(its im .xml format but i am not able to interpret anything at all)

thanks
Xenon

well everytime you get a hardboot like that in XP it will creat a entry into the minidump file

I wrote a tutorial on how to decypher the minidump and memory dump files

Thank you that's useful :)

btw it was the powersupply which was crapping up, there wasnt anything wrong with it when i opened it up(or burnt wires or transformer or anything), just there was this heap of dust on it, cleaned it up with a vacuum cleaner

teaches an important lesson, just cleaning the motherboard and fans isnt enough, the SMPS needs to be opened up in 4 months or so(depending on dust conditions)and cleaned
