why did no one suggest system restore?  huh?  one stop fix.  oh well.  prolly too late now...
next thing.  to remove media player... and reinstall: look on this page: http://www.winsupers...dowsxp_tips.asp
scroll half way down and it'll tell you how to remove the hidden components.  i hope you're smart enough to figure this out.  you'll have to un-hide the hidden/system files to do this... you didn't snap to the registry editor too quick... and you DID move a folder when you were told by windows NOT to... idiot.
if this doesn't work... well.. you can't download a new version of WMPXP because it's just that.  Windows Media Player for Xp.

if this doesn't work you're SOL. (that's Shit Outta Luck for those of you not in the know.)

it's issues like this that make me wish we required licenses for computer purchases.

excuse me i don't appreciate such insulting comments....
a. I don't know the registry and i decided not to f*ck around with it and f*ck up the rest of my computer
b. I moved the folder because it was copied and then moved because i tried to install a codec that wouldn't install. I was actually trying to run the codec on the copy and not f*ck up the other copy...that way if something f*cked up i could always go and delete the ocpy and replace the good copy.
c. i dont' use system restore after it failed me once with Windows ME

if you want to go for a show of brains, let's go :angry:

we're not talking about a battle of brains... you even suggesting the idea makes me chuckle. truth be known Sky and i were kickin' back watching movies at the time i made the post. we thought it would be the proper "Vet" reply to such a post. oh well, sorry for offending you. guess you'll be listening to those error messages from now on. Win9x could be, as you'd say it, f*cked with... NT doesn't react well. the NT system is meant to work. in the future, before you go altering built in files, back up the registry at the very least. from the registry editor, you go to file -> export and save it to the desktop so it can be easily restored even from safe-mode. i'd also suggest using System restore. create a Safe point. the most it'll do is not work... and you can always undo a system restore.
you may have had trouble in Me, but XP is NOT Me.

you never said if you fixed the problem...

Add/Remove optional features of Windows XP
Contributed by Ong Choon Keong and Hans Breemer

To dramatically expand the list of applications you can remove from Windows XP after installation, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\inf (substituting the correct drive letter for your version of Windows) and open the sysoc.inf file. Under Windows XP Professional Edition, this file will resemble the following by default:

[Version] Signature = "$Windows NT$"
DriverVer=06/26/2001,5.1.2505.0

[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7
dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7
IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7
TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2
msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6
ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7
fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7
AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
msnexplr=ocmsn.dll,OcEntry,msnmsn.inf,,7
smarttgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msnsl.inf,,7
RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7
AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7
CommApps=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,communic.inf,HIDE,7
MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7
AccessOpt=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,optional.inf,HIDE,7
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7
MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7
ZoneGames=zoneoc.dll,ZoneSetupProc,igames.inf,,7

[Global]
WindowTitle=%WindowTitle%
WindowTitle.StandAlone="*"

The entries that include the text hide or HIDE will not show up in Add/Remove Windows Components by default. To fix this, do a global search and replace for ,hide and change each instance of this to , (a comma). Then, save the file, relaunch Add/Remove Windows Components, and tweak the installed applications to your heart's content.

just go to edit -> replace and find ",hide" (without quotes) and replace with "," and replace all. that'll unhide them all. save the file. open the control panel and do add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components -> accessories and utilities -> multimedia -> media player. haven't tried removing WMPXP ever. this solution seems a bit too easy to do. i'd put money it only cosmetically removed Media Player. but, as you've already messed it up as it is... you could move the folder after you "remove" it and see if it puts it back for you. just an idea. next question would be... does MP launch from the .exe file?

Why not try it in reverse then? If the .exe works, open it and go to the tools section, then options. Choose the file associations tab and uncheck everything. click "ok" and close it down. Then open it back up and recheck everything. Maybe it will reassociate everything with the current location of the player. If it does work, then just copy shortcuts of the .exe to the quick launch or desktop or wherever you normally have it.

BTW, the location of my media player on XP Home is: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

I'm surprised that if you go through the windows update site that it doesn't see that it is not where it belongs and offer to reinstall it.

believe it. if there are no real updates for WMPXP why would M$ have it there to download. if you want a downloadable version... wait for WMP9series codename Corona. for more info check: http://www.winsupers...case/corona.asp
