I would reccomend that any category with less than 50 topics and/or 300 posts probably should be looked at pretty hard in terms of usefulness. Under supported categories won't help the site grow as new users will leave if no one answers
Separating MySQL and PHP is probably an error as it will cut down on your support for both categories. If the final decision is to divide them, you definately shouldn't have both a MySQL and a DB forum, just put MySQL in the DB forum. It's really hard to decide because Perl is pretty commonly used with MySQL and there are several "combo's" for each DB. Maybe couple Access and MS SQL with ASP... not sure but make too many categoruies and some will become obsolete, too few and you have too much crap in the way.
Subdirectories are kind of cool, but putting high traffic stuff in subdirectories is bad for site growth. VB shouldn't be easier to get to than PHP because that's bad navigation in terms of usability.
html should be html/javascript
flash should be flash/actionscript
site feedback and site check should either be together or combined
reviews should be in whatever prolly' next to news (no one's going to give you free software if your reviews are under hardware
design and graphics could be one forum
or else cool sites and design
then graphics and 3D
this is only my opinion and we all know about those, but intuitive and concise is always better in web design. The better your navigation the more likely the community will be useful to outsiders and therefore grow...
web & graphic design
html/javascript
design/cool sites
flash/actionscript
3D/graphics
site check
just my .02

changes: reviews moved to community, although like i said, when the article system is up, that forum is gone. same with cool interviews. case mods merged with hardware lounge. html renamed html/javascript. web design and design lounge merged.
we also really need to consider what hoopster said about the databases subforum. go or no go?
note: site feedback, and sitecheck not merged, because site feedback is for feedback pertaining to dreamincode, while site check is for anyone (going to be people with 25+ posts only) to have their site critiqued.

I say go.. It would be a good place to put all database install query questions. People could still use the asp/php forums for specific questions, but somethinglike what database should i use or how do I join three tables so that this that and the other are related...

also, vb and qbasic, we should prolly get rid of it, we get almost no questions, and when we do its just a script kiddie asking how to turn off a computer.

The only issue with that is that MySQL has got a few glaring differences in how they implement some things and the nested SELECT is totally missing.
What Sam said makes sense but I'm partial to PHP/MySQL so it's hard for me to decide what the correct path would be.

I'm not sure that a post limit on the site checks is a good idea as it actually might encourage spam as opposed to combat it...
Also make your community less friendly to newbies is not a solid plan for making your community grow...

i think, if they can't wait 25-50 posts to get a sitecheck, their not the kind of member we want anyways.

Thank you Sloth, Marko, Jared, and Quik for helping me sift through ALL the topics in the Databases forum and seperate them out into the new PHP, CGI, and ASP forums! Good job guys... 125 topics in about 30 minutes!!!
