I'm super excited about the Data Structures I course I'm TAing this semester. I share one lab section with another GTA. This is a maturity course where we focus on not only data structures and algorithms (including graphs and Big-O!) but helping students learn to write clean code. Additionally, I have a freshman in the mixed senior/graduate cryptography course. Half the students were also done with the lab before class started, and the ones that stayed by and large were engaged and sharp. These seem like strong students, the material is interesting, and this is the class where folks become computer scientists. So it should be fun! It was also nice to hear students talking about why they chose my lab section: "he speaks English and he knows what he is doing." When students say "he knows what he is doing" as a positive, it means they think I convey the material well. So I'll take that as a compliment!
The Intro to Java class last semester was frustrating (though most of my students were trying), as it was hard to break them of bad habits and get them problem solving (getting them to understand why the practices were bad was tough in and of itself). My goal this semester is to provide better feedback on code style and efficiency. I'm a ten hour TA for this class, and our lab only meets once a week for two hours. Last semester, I was a ten hour TA for Intro to Java and lab met twice a week for two hours at a time. So less time in lab means more time to devote to better grading.

ETA to OS refresh: 5 minutes. I am looking forward to this so much
I made (in theory) a bootable flash drive last night, and will be attempting that first (since it will be faster), and one of my coworkers was nice enough to bring in an external DVD reader for me to use today. So this is happening... finally!

Starring at two tickets' code and trying to figure out how they got those piles to work in the first place.
Two modules have the extract same spec and implement identical event calendars. One hacked a way to make it work how they want front end. The other uses the calendar but looses functionality, because it is missing the back job.
Another updates or inserts contact info, only if it already exists.

Well, I'm glad that the programmer we fired a few years ago found new work, anyway.

Working on gathering specs for (another) new project. Not easy to do on a Friday...on a holiday weekend...when everyone and their brother is out of the office.

No, MLK day is going to fall some time in February this year. Oh, wait, that's just for us.

Got Fedora going on my machine no problem. Removed the extra cruft, and installed virtual box. Rebooted and just got a black screen. My guess is that either something extra got removed that shouldn't have, or virtual box hosed it. So I got to reinstall. Now that I am back up and running I am planning on not trying to install virtual box (I don't think I removed anything that should have caused problems...).
<edit>
FUACGKESJHASDFIGUDO~!
Turns out it wasn't virtual box, but uninstalling libreoffice has dependencies set up incorrectly which results in uninstalling something that gdm requires (though reinstalling gdm doesn't fix it... nor does reinstalling libreoffice...). So now I am once again with a machine that has no graphics capabilities... Time to see about manually installing gdm/gnome3 and getting it working on a minimal laptop I have at home and then attempting to redo the process on my work machine. F today.

Practicing Linux and learning the CLI, in preparation for my server I purchased coming hopefully this week. I ordered a T20 Xeon, a 256 SSD, (2) 3TB Western Digital Reds, 2x8 sticks of ECC RAM, and I'm going to probably start off with Ubuntu on it. SUPER EXCITED! I'm going to be learning a lot more about networking for sure, which is always cool. I'm kind of jumping into it all, but I have someone online helping me, plus countless Google searches will get me going in the right direction.
I'm also working on some WPF, finally figuring out all my binding stuff, although not completely haha. Making a shopping cart right now, just to practice some more binding. I'll probably try to play a Roguelike tonight, maybe Cataclysm DDA, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, or something along those lines. Maybe the Doom RL. Anyways, happy Saturday!!

Interesting you are going with Linux while learning .Net.
Perusing furniture that I am still missing in the new place. Wayfair has some nice looking affordable stuff, may go that route. Ordered a few things for the house and some programming books to add to the pile. Looking into the Phalcon PHP framework.

Yeah, but eventually I would like to switch back to learning C++, once I'm a bit more comfortable with C#, because I already started with C++ and I would like to do more with Linux systems. Sometimes I do a couple things at once, but I eventually get the hang of it

Actually no, I'm just going with Linux because it's something I'm interested in learning now, and I've been playing around with it a little bit for a short time now. It seems really powerful and if I can learn it while getting my server to do what I want, I figured why not. I know it's not the easiest thing to pick up, but so far I'm doing okay with it. Getting my CLI down and trying to remember the most important commands. I'm reading up on permissions and stuff. Got my Samba sharing to work with my Windows machine and also am able to SSH into the laptop. Trying to get as ready as I can for when the server shows up
In the end, I'm just having a lot of fun learning this stuff!
