I personally would draw it on a piece of paper, decide what fonts, layouts, colors, and others to use before i dive in blindly in to designing it.

Once I do that, i usually look for a website that can help me understand the design perspective and than i start coding.

Figure things out first, than make them pretty.

What do you mean by ok? both upsides and downsides i recognized. upside is the fast loading and downside is very elementary design.
