Inscriptions for the future..

Posted 27 August 2015 - 09:26 PM

I ended up in an interesting discussion the other day about what sort of message you would leave, if given the opportunity, on a monument or wall for the future. Say your school, or town, allowed you some space what would it be? Simply your name, a quote, a lyric, a warning, a math formula, or a line of code?

The discussion ended up limiting it down to three lines with fourteen characters a line, and the message was engraved in stone so no changes on a later date.

I was waffling between a few. The first - simply my name. Simple and classic.

The other was:
PRINT "HELLO |
WORLD" |

Maybe just divide nothingness by nothingness and getting one!
lim(x->0)     |
sin x / x |

There were a ton of napkins used up trying to wedge lyrics or super cool quotes in there.. What would you pick?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

It's hard to come up with anything more profound than Euler's Identity:

e ^ (i*pi) + 1 = 0

I think I'd just go with that.

I would go with
(2^n) - 1

That is the formula to the least number of moves possible on towers of hanoi when n is the number of disks.

I believe those are the LOST numbers? Never liked the show but I recall my friends saying them a lot.

Either the X combinator or the Y combinator probably. Or just the definition of lambda calculus and the beta reduction rule. Hard to choose. Maybe all 3. They are the most beautiful bits of mathematics in existence, and indeed thought IMO. I've often thought of using the Y combinator as my epitaph. I can't commit to getting a tattoo of it because something better might come along in my life but if I were to die right now I would want that on my tomb stone.

Boss haha, you got it. I'm actually watching it again to hopefully pick up more this time around. I'm trying to finish off Sons of Anarchy soon though before I put all the time into Lost that it requires to finish the show haha.
