Pc restarts

Posted 27 November 2007 - 10:24 AM

When I shutdown my Computer it reboots

I don't know whats the problem

I click Turn off :D but it reboots

Also tried shutting down through the task manager

command prompt but still nothing happens (and I think it doesn't matters from whhere you shutdown)

Any one can help me ??

I have to plug off the switch directly to shut it down

1.) the power button could be stuck, making a constant connection causing the pc to power back on

2.) there is an error within windows when it tries to power off, & issues a reboot, so the shutdown never happens. Try booting into safe mode & then issuing a shutdown & see if it works correctly. If that's the case, then use your favorite spyware search & remove anything found.

I had a similar issue several months ago and I figured it out. I went into the Bios and disabled the turn back on when you lose power. Hope that is the issue.

It can be several things that are causing the issue. The most common is either a bios setting or hardware failure. Some motherboards ASUS in particular have a issue with how windows tells it to shut down. Hardware sometimes just dose not get along with software :P .Couple things I suggest:
1. Update BIOS (if newer is available)
2. Update windows (Most of the time it wont solve the issue but its good practice and if your system has not been updated lately it could solve the issue.
3. Test shutting down your system in safe mode (Press F8 at startup. This can help rule out any bad drivers that might cause the issue)
4. Run last know good configuration (Press F8 at startup. This will restore your system back to the last time it made a restore point, might lose some documents and software)
6. Just Spybot search and destroy, or your favorite spyware removal tool, also run a anti-virus AVG is free and works well but any will do
7. Back up all data and do a system restore of your restore portion if you have either created one or if your system came with it
8. If all else fails and you have a manufactures computer ex(Dell, HP, Compaq) give them a call
If your computers custom take it to a service center if you dont feel like trouble shooting each device.

If you dont feel like going threw the steps I suggest just taking it to a service center because I have a feeling its either A. Bad Mobo or Power Supply or B. BIOS Error.

That is a common problem I saw allot at my previous company. Mainly its just a window setting that keeps messing up since MS sometimes dose not like to hold registry values. Go to the control panel under power and check if their are any settings off. Also check the BIOS since some manufacturers include options for closing the lib and power off the system.

Worst case is either Windows went corrupt somehow or the part that activates the sleep mode on the laptop is not working.

Also just from my observations in the last 2 years this happens a lot to Dell systems. I have seen it more with them then any other manufactures so if you have a Dell best thing to do is call them up if its under warranty.

you could attempt to shut it down, and when the power is off on the computer for the 2 seconds between shutting down and starting up, pull the plug. I see no harm in this because technically the power was off by being shut down.

Something similar used to happen to our school computers. The computer used to restart on its own. Really pissing off when your work isn't saved :(.

I would say once in awhile thats ok but dont do it to often. What ever is causing the problem is keeping your motherboard powered and hard drive powered also. Even know it appears to be shut down their is still power in the system for the restart. Hard drives are ment to take a beating but when you remove the power from them often it can cause damage to the heads inside the drive.

Who is the manufacture of your computer? When I worked for my past company we had a couple computer manufacture reps that I knew. I might be able to ask them and see what their engineers say.

Could be a over heating issue? or just windows being windows :P .

I had alots of restarts when I was first installing my water cooling system in my computer. Almost fried my AMD FX 55 trying to overclock it. :P

Could be a over heating issue? or just windows being windows :P .

My very 1st computer that we built used a Cyrus 200mhz processor (for those that remember that short lived adventure!) & of the 3 systems we built (all us friends chipped in & bought in bulk to save shipping) so the hardware specs were exactly the same.

My machine magically rebooted without cause or reason.

I took it to a friends' repair shop, where he was unable to diagnose any problems.

Once I started getting into Linux, the problem disappeared as mysteriously as it presented itself.

So I can vouch for the "Windows being Windows" remark. Of course, this was AT hardware, before the bios had control over power abilities with acpi.
