i was checking my mail (just updated virus definitions) and it died. it just froze. everything came to a sudden and complete stop. then, when i restarted, it couldnt even get to the grub loader before stopping again, i finally got to windows startup, got half way, and it froze again. soi i went into safe mode, restored to 2 days ago, still nothing. then i went back into safe mode, and restored to june 3rd. it still wont load. any clues?

being that you've restored it twice and you're getting the same thing, is it possible that it isn't your software but perhaps your hardware?

well, the only hardware chages ive made is installing the maelstrom, and it doesnt connect to any part of the computer except the power supply, and i even tried unplugging it before starting (been unplugged last 5 restart attempts)

Almost sounds like you've got some bad memory addresses that windows is trying to use. Did you make an oops when you installed the maelstrom?

And you've tried ALL the swear words? even meecrob?
-shrugs- if you're positive your hardware's fine, and you can get into safe mode, then there's something loading in windows that's pooching things in normal mode. I'd start with msconfig & disabling all of the extra apps, along with disabling non-essential hardware and drivers, such as NICs, etc.. if you can get windows to boot stable, if crippled, then start re-enabling stuff slowly. you might just have to reload the OS. Do you get any blue screens, vxd errors, ole32's or anything??

Sloth, I actually recall something similar happening to my system here at work like that... gets to the same spot in windows every time and just stops....
Start pulling cards... LAN, Modem, Switch the video with the motherboard/another card if you have one, any non-essentail things plugged in (fans that aren't essential)
Do one at a time.
