Multiple Wireless Connection(s)

Posted 30 November 2007 - 09:54 AM

the only way to access net now is via my mobile phone, now since i can have multiple connections(since i there are 3 phones available), can i use them to download files/music etc faster ? so far this isn't really working at all, the download manger just uses one connection actively and the other stays idle(im using Flashget right now to manage downloads), is there any way possible to have multiple connects to be used altogether?

thanks
Xenon

What you're talking about is certainly possible. However, it would be incredibly difficult. I've got a four way NIC in a box at home. It can either have all four NICs paired, or have them in a mix and match situation of 3-1, 2-2, 1-1-2, 1-1-1-1... you get the idea. I had to do some hacking on the driver and submit a patch, and I will tell you that you're going to have to hack a lot on it. You're also probably going to be limited to apps that will support it (like BitTorrent).

If you're using Windows, I would suggest you switch to Linux and use the money you saved from not buying Windows licenses on a faster internet connection... :)

Yes you can bundle/pair connections together to make a larger connection. For this to be effective thought you must have a separate internet connection for each (such as 3 DSL lines threw Verizon). The reason behind this is when you have 1 internet connection all local connections (all connections to your router) share off that 1 line. So by having more connections from your compute really dose you no good because you still have 1 internet connection to the web.

Also another factor to your connection speed is how fast your internet actually is and how fast your internal connection can handle. Most people today have 10/100 components in their network (can do 100mbps using the hardware). So an example is you have Verizon DSL at 1.5mbps and all your network hardware only dose 100mbps. You send a file to your friend that is 50mb and you expect that it will only that a half a sec to do. The problem is its going to take 40secs since once the file goose from your hardware to your modem (DSL Modem) it only gets sent over the internet to your friend at 1.5mbps.

Their are many ways you can bind more then 1 internet connection together but it is still limited by the network resources you have and each devices connection speed. This is all only a small explanation of why and what you can do for internet connection binding. Alot of them are for large scale networks and also cost a good amount of money for hardware to manage them.

Now since you are using 3 different mobile phones without proper hardware/software you wont be able to bind them together. The reason for this is each phone has a IP address of its own for data connection. Most computers are only made to except information threw IP address its either assigned from DHCP or is provided as a Static IP. So that is why you have 1 active connection and 2 idling since your computer cant uses the other 2. You can do some modifications software wise to solve the problem so applications see the connections as one large one. But that has its own problems which limit how well it works.

The answer to your question is: Yes you can but be prepared for lots of driver hacking, troubleshooting, and issues. Also it might not even works with 3 mobile phones since I would think they connect via USB and dont have RJ45 connections (Cat5, Cat5, or Cat6).
