Social Networking site w wordpress-BP vs custom build? pros and cons

Posted 17 November 2015 - 01:01 PM

Hi fellow developers,

I'm doing a bit research on creating a social networking website.

I was curious to know what are the pros and cons from
coding a social media network website from scratch, rather than
using a CMS like wordpress with plugin buddypress?

And also if was curious to know who does company's like youtube and facebook hand user profile issues ...is there some mothership like dashboard where they can see all their members?

Thanks in advance

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Wordpress is not going to scale well as a social network imo. Though great for easy-admin panel for those not technically inclined, it's bloated for processing. I'm sure a webserver will quickly reach processing & memory capacity using wordpress with a minimally successful social network.

Thanks! modi123 for the quick reply

I'm a pretty much a intermediate level coder. So it would be in my best interest to use a CMS on start...then gradually migrate to a custom setup over time?
also is this workflow process used website development?

Rolling your own and an established CMS do not, typically, allow for a 'gradual migration' from one to the other.

What work flow? To use a CMS then grind gears as you try and roll your own? Not an efficient one.

Thanks no2pencil!
so it appears wordpress CMS/ buddypress plugin is real bloated as far as processing.

Hi modi123, Thanks again.

yes this is my plan. I plan to start out with wordpress CMS and buddpress then gradually migrate to a custom build over time.

I figure this is a standard workflow/process with any web development project, if for example an older website needed and upgrade . designers and developers would take would take not of what features are working from the old site and add those same feature to the new website development plan ...over time i.e.
So are your saying this is not the way to go? or are you saying it would be more efficient to just start coding a custom build? and through the CMS out

Thanks

I am saying I have not started a site using a CMS with the knowing intent of ditching it at some point for my own.

Thanks modi for your advice,

Another reason I'm figuring to go through the process this way to develop a network is because, I've been reading that once the database reaches like a million plus users ,
wordpress and buddypress mysql db is not great for scalability. or able to scale adequately enough compared to custom code network.
Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

In theory, if done right, wordpress can scale to what ever.. but in practice most folks don't do that. Caching, CDN, etc. There are options for 'no sql' databases like mongo and .. well.. nosql.. but that's a different ball of belly lint.

Sounds familiar...

But let it be said, that actually getting a million users is another problem.

It's not that hard. In _MY_ social network site I auto generated a million profiles and back stories. People can puruse them at their leisure. When you sign up you are assigned one of these names and back stories at random. No taksie-backsies.

Spoiler

Well, they always say that it's the 1st million that's the most difficult... guess you've found away around that ;)

Yup.. and it helps ease the triggered anxiety of talking about yourself and amassing a web of lies. The starter web is already there!

My apologizes nopencil ...lol... you did state this as well. So final verdict would be to just code from scratch. Which I realize will take more time.

Creating a social media from scratch gives you much freedom to customize your website in terms of creating functions, creating your templates/designing your websites, and tinkering your website in any way you want it. However, this could be difficult for beginner and requires more effort to build.

Using cms would make life so much easier. Everything is already there, you just need to install it and activate it(themes and plugins) and configure how your website's look. There is no problem here since their user-interface is so easy and simple to use.
