hi,
I recently got a Microsoft Zune mp3 player. I am fairly new to programming, so here is my question. Is it possible to modify or change the code that the operates the Zune? I wanted to know this because I think it would be challenging to modify the Zune, if it can even be done. I think that first you would have to decode the program, But even if you did that, could you modify it? -polik5544

It's definitely possible. It's been done for the ipod. I suggest you read up on how that was done.
However, depending on your interpretation of "fairly new to programming" I think that rewriting the firmware of the zune is a little beyond you.

The firmware the zune works on is extremely complicated and intricate. I have read articles of people working on it but have found alots of issues with getting them to work.
Microsoft has made it know they are very protective of their zune and modifying it. That said that has not stopped anyone before.
If you are new to programming like I kinda am in C++ it would take forever and it is pretty advanced. You have to create a whole firmware which is thousands of lines of code. Just think it this way Microsoft pays people to put in 50+ hour weeks just to create firmware for this and they are expect programmers. So just think how long it would take someone else?
But dont let me hold you back. If you are up for the challenge I would say go ahead and try it.
