I downloaded and burned the iso for ubuntu live cd (v 6. something) and it goes fine until it gets to the splash screen, then it gets to "Creating Live CD user" and stops. after a minute or so the screen goes blank, and only when i hit enter do i get a command prompt. I dont know any commands for linux so i dont know what i'm supposed to do here. Is something wrong or do i need a special command to actually use ubuntu?

Why didn't you get 7.10? Version 6 is old news.
In answer to your question, I don't know. The best thing I can come up with is that something about your hardware configuration is throwing ubuntu off. I know the software works for the most part, else it would have never been released.
I would download the latest version and see if that works for you.
If you don't want to download/burn another whole ubuntu disc, try typing startx into the terminal window.

It is a bad driver. Unbuntu takes sometime normally to get all the drivers required loaded into your ram. That why live CD's sometimes work and dont.
Try 7.1 once their site is back up. They updated the driver libary alot so you should have better luck.

I installed Ubuntu 7.10 couple of days ago, and it works fine. I love it. I used openSuSE 10.2 before, and so far, I can say that Ubuntu 7.10 wipes the floor with openSuSE.

If you messed up with the ISO burn or something, get them to send you a disc, otherwise try Fiesty(7.10) and see what happens

Okay I've got 7.10 up and running now but lo and behold the wireless wont turn on!?! I have a switch on the front of my laptop that turns on the wireless, but the light wont come on when I press it in Ubuntu...works in XP though. THe visuals in Ubuntu are amazing and I'm considering using it as my main OS on the laptop. I would just like to get that wireless working first. Any Ideas?
Thanks

You need to find out the manufacturer of the wifi chip. I would then browse through the packages in synaptic and try to find something that looks like it's a driver for your chip. Also, you should ask the ubuntu support forums. They're probably able to help you more than I could.

Do you know how to use Synaptic?
It's the ubuntu package manager. OPen the Applications menu and it should be there. If you can't fins it after hunting around, open a terminal and type synaptic
If it says that it couldn't find synaptic, type sudo apt-get install synaptic -y
Then, synaptic should appear in your menu, or you can run it by typing synaptic into the terminal window again.
Search for the name "Broadcom" and if nothing comes up, look around on the ubuntu community forums.
