Neo you can come hide in my cicada bunker, but I'll warn you that when I play bass they swarm the house cause the vibrations make them...amorous
also, where were you in 2004 when Brood X was out? I'm just outside of the Brood V footprint but only marginally.
Brood V is estimated to be several orders of magnitude smaller than X. V is, if I read correctly, 1.5 million cicadas per square mile while Brood X was 1 billion per square mile.
And I plan to go camping in Hocking Hills this summer, so...I'm sure I'll be well acclimated to them by then.

I thought it was going to be worse. I was in Vandalia/Dayton area a lot. I remember going to my cousins graduation party right there by Taylorsville Dam. I wanted to jump on that moonbounce so bad. It wasn't worth it. Screamed like a bitch and ran inside and played Mario the rest of the party.

I don't think it'll be so bad.
In my county they're estimated to be only reach around 100,000-200,000 per square mile.
The media exaggerates everything. Everything. Don't pay attention to what the news says about how bad it's going to be - these are the same people responsible for $6/gallon gas, Donald Trump, and Snookie.

I've been having a meltdown for the past several days thinking about the horror that is coming this summer. I want to vomit. It's literally my worst nightmare. I remember the last time and I heard it's going to be worse this year. I thought we were good until 2021, but NOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. This means I will not be doing any gardening this year. *shudder*
What I've gathered thus far: neo is pregnant. It's not the first time. She has morning sickness. She's due this summer. She's been placed on a gardening restriction. And apparently the kid is some kind of demon spawned of Satan himself. Not sure who you've been banging, neo, but you might want to start background checking these fellows... just sayin'.

For contrast, and I'll put out I'm arachnaphobic so this number is utterly terrifying to me, there are (estimated) about 26 million spiders per square mile in Ohio - which is itself an order of magnitude more than Brood V. It looks much scarier on paper. Just avoid heavily wooded areas until mid-summer and you'll get away from most of it.
I plan to make a trip to go catch some and throw them at my brother. He's terrified of bugs, and they'll fly in a straight line at full force if you throw them. So I can chill in the drive way and bean him in the head with them as he comes out the front door. Shit's hilarious.

Don't do that. I actually don't mind spiders. Or snakes. I'm weird.

I think I knew that cause I didn't think it would bother you.
Just trying to show you it's not as bad as the numbers sound.

When I was younger & lived in Erie County, my dad was bitten by a brown recluse.

I killed about a dozen scorpions in my back yard last night. AZ isn't listed as a location for a periodic brood, but we do get them here, maybe even annually. A couple years ago I found one molting and sat there and watched it, it was pretty cool to see the wings unfold and everything harden.

I really dislike spiders and snakes, never liked them.
I have never even seen a scorpion in real life, are the ones you killed in your backyard dangerous?

The only thing I can't do is spiders to be fair, I rather like the sound of Cicadas.
@Modi - I have no sick days, no vacation days. I work by the hour, so I work or I don't get paid... Add to that I have lots to do and a dwindling time frame in which to do it...

I think they're bark scorpions, so yeah they're relatively dangerous. They'll only cause real trouble if you're allergic, a baby, or elderly though. A healthy adult won't die from a single sting. They glow under UV light though, so I can walk around at night with a UV flashlight and see them all. Most days I only see a few, but last night I found at least a dozen.
