You want to prevent people from reading from an external harddrive? Just encrypt it.

Look, champ. You need to explain more of what you are asking. Do you want the external hard drive to be like a cd where you can write once, but only read after? Do you want no one to access it? WHAT?!

If you can copy a file from the computer to the external drive but, can not copy the file back to the computer from the external drive then there could be several reasons.
First, make sure you are copying the files back to a directory that you know you have privileges to write to such as the Documents folder or the Desktop. I would also try the external drive on another computer to see if you have the same problem.
There could be several other things that could be wrong too. Maybe the the drivers are corrupted, maybe the cord between the computer and drive is bad, maybe the port on the computer has a problem, maybe the drive itself is bad. It is basically a guessing game.
I would really recommend contacting the manufacturer of the drive to see if they have a solution or some suggestions.
