Advice to start software being developed?

Posted 14 August 2016 - 05:17 PM

I'm just your average guy with an idea. I was going to try to learn write code to develop this particular piece of software just for myself, not for sale. I'm 48, well past my easy learning stage and I'm pretty sure its going to take years for me to learn enough to write it.

What is the best way to get software developed without going broke? I'm thinking Iíll brake it down into small objects that work together and have it written that way?

But how do I get it out of my head and on paper? Is there such a thing as advice coders that help with this avoiding the inherent conflict of interest of him wanting to code it himself?

A sufficiently large, non-trivial piece of software costs a few thousand dollars. There are no two ways about it. You can learn and do it yourself, or you can pay someone to do it. The odds of finding someone to mentor you through it or do it for free are negligible.

Have your idea explained, and designed out, in its entirety. Sketch out screen designs, what should be there for user interface, what actions should be going on, platform, etc. Also be ready to do some testing.

You could always pay for someone to work through the design aspect.

Out of your head and on paper is the first place to start. Figure out everything you want it to do, how it should look, and how you want to access it. Those things would be needed before it is developed regardless of whether you or someone else starts working on anything.

First thing, you need to do is to create the website design or the software design on a piece of paper that how your website design should look like. You can get more ideas by searching in google or any other search engine(e.g; website layout ideas).

After that what you need to do is to build the logic for your website, how you will build the functionality of the software/website like if you are going to be using database to store the data or you will store it in a file etc.

You could try and talk with your local IT education center/school thingy. They might be able to use your idea as a project assignment simulating a real life scenario, and you'd have a huge team of developers competing to make the best program for you.

School projects can vary in quality. Students are invested in doing well overall, not in giving you a perfect product that is your ideal. I would not advocate this route, especially if you only have a vague idea of what you want. I don't think it will be a winning proposition for anyone but the instructor.

If you are unsure what you want, a skilled business analyst would be brought in to pull those details, you didn't know were important yet, out.

Many college programmers are good and giving exactly what is needed without thought to anything else. That is also why, they are hired as junior developers and not higher.

You not only need someone with the experience to see where it will go, but someone to determine exactly what you are after in the first place.

So I suppose it would be best to find someone local? What is the average per hour for this advice?

Thanks for all the replies, I realize this thread is very vague.
If anyone is interested in reading my ideas about this program and giving me your opinion PM me

I would advise against a per hour rate, except for the discovery. It is great for the developer, but can drain you to abandonment.

Figure out requirements and wireframes, then get a per milestone cost or overall quote estimate.

I completely agree with you on that. Right now I just want to talk to someone to see what is possible, what is common knowledge code and what's going to be thehhardest part

Their about us says their an agency. I'll send them an email but I think an agency will charge more to answer my questions than just a knowledgeable coder form our python meet-up group.
