Precisely measure distance between layers (PhotoShop)

Posted 26 September 2016 - 12:11 PM

How can I precisely measure the vertical distance (gap) between two layers, be they images or shapes, etc.?

I'm very new to PhotoShop. I was attempting the second answer here, with both the eyedropper and ruler tools, but it wasn't snapping to the bottom/top of the layers as far as I could tell. (The Snap options are checked by default.)

Another suggestion I noticed was to use the Measurement Tool/Log, but I'm not sure if I need that(?).

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Ah, what? Layers are theoretically flat planes. There is no 'vertical distance' with them like you were to stack books or raccoon pelts.

There is a ruler tool and I can measure pixel height (circled) but I want the ruler to snap to the edge of the layers. Holding Shift gives me a straight line but I want it to snap precisely.

Well I mean the gap between the contents of each layer, containing a single picture or shape etc..

okay.. you mean height with the units of pixels. If you have a specific line you want to snap to you can make 'guide lines' and have 'snap on' set.. and it should - consistently - snap to that line on the photo regardless of layer.

Thanks.

I've worked out a way without the addition of guides. I'll add a rectangle, Free Transform it, and resize it so that it snaps to the edge of layers. As I'm resizing it tells me the size in pixels; I changed the default units displayed under Edit/ Preferences.

I can keep the rectangle for a while as a layer, just moving it out of the way until I need it.
