Video App Development Question

Posted 29 March 2017 - 07:39 AM

Hi, all!

I'm looking to develop a video app that streams and downloads content, but I'm not sure about the security protocols with regards to protecting the downloaded content from being copied/transferred to another hard drive. Does anyone have any insights about as how to proceed? Thanks.

Most easily put, you can't. Anything that moves to a users system is theirs, and if they want to access or copy it, you have little recourse.

If the content comes from YOUR servers, you could scramble it in some propitiatory scheme that only your server and your client app know. They can move/copy the file itself all they want, but it would still only be understandable to your app.

If the problem is *sharing* of the file amongst other users of the app... Then you'd have to encrypt/decrypt in real-time with some key that is user-specific. Bob can watch the video on his app that has his special key, but Jim's key would be different and not descramble the video.

No... I'm not going to write a "how do I do all that" tutorial.
