Back in my day, if we wanted to play with a switch we would have to go to one of our bedrooms and play with the one on the wall. If we won, the lights would come on, if we lost the lights would go out. Hours and hours of fun!

Oh yeah? Back in my day if we wanted to go play with a switch one of us would have to disrespect our parents, shirk our duties, or sass off to an elder.. then Pa would take us out back, cut a length off the ol' willow tree out by the pond, and tan our backsides.

Oh yeah? Well at least you were lucky enough to have a willow tree let alone trees! When we mouthed off we would get a good o' paddling with the sharpest nearby rock one could find on the ground. Couldn't sit for a week! But then again we wouldn't want to sit down because our mother would say that idle hands were the sign of the devil and whack us with another rock.

So I found a project that my predecessor was working on. I guess he monopolized the creation of the webservices which are the backbone of the system, so no one else actually knows how they work.

Well, I was testing one of the calls and it returned 404. So I dived into the code and found that if there is no data on the return or it throws an error or anything outside of it's intended purpose it throws a 404 or 500.

So, before I have an opportunity to really connect with my team and set some standards, I have to fix and document the backbone of the entire project.

This'll be fun.

On the plus side though, it's all written in C# which is not a language I've worked in before but one I need to learn for that side project so I can work with Xamarin as was suggested to me :)

Has anyone spent a great deal of time out in the Seattle area? Looking at some feasibility of my plan I am framing up to see Hoh Rainforest, Rainier, yell at the Pacific ocean, and Olympic park. Like when does it turn shitty.. is crap really that far apart, is Seattle a PIA to get out of, etc.

Shoot me a PM if you think you can help.

I need to start documenting some processes... I also received an email today inquiring whether I would be interested in an architect role, I am actually, but want more time in this company before I leave for delusions of grandeur.

@bingy - heh.. I am not certain what I am doing yet.. and Portlandia is a substantial hike. We'll see.. gotta stop treating this like some abstract traveling salesman problem that is missing definitive data points.

PM sent! I am originally from the Seattle area, living just North of it now in Vancouver Canada. I will also second the fact that Portland is an up and coming city. Never been there myself, but my wife has and she can't stop raving about it's art and craft brewing scene.

:)

P.S. Forgot to mention it in the PM but the Olympics are pretty nice. In some ways I like them better than the Cascades (where Mt. Rainier is)

  • Cellmate asked if I had contacted HR about getting a list of new employees in our department.
  • I said that I had not and asked if he could remember the name of the HR contact person.
  • He told me her name and said our boss had emailed it to him and he was wondering if he should be the one to send the email.
  • I told him it didn't matter to me... if he wanted to send it, he could send it; if he wanted me to send it, I'd send it.
  • He started chanting "She told you to do it in the meeting! She told you to do it in the meeting!" Over and over for 2 or 3 minutes straight.
  • "FORWARD THE NAME SHE SENT YOU AND I'LL SEND THE FUCKING EMAIL!"
  • Not only did he NOT forward the name to me, he's all butthurt and refusing to speak to me.

Jesus H. Tap Dancing Christ! Who the hell has time for this shit?!

Sounds like you just need a new job B9. It will make you feel better. :D

Btw... currently working on the migration of some old custom Joomla code over to a modern Wordpress project we are building. It is going alright and will be interesting to see how it all works in the new system.

I'm considering Vancouver as a relocation destination, or maybe Raleigh or Austin. I realize it's cold, but does Vancouver have any decent scuba diving?

In completely unrelated news, we're setting heat records again.

I would say it's done come up already, but who knows. They've definitely been working hard to get rid of all of the artists and musicians and writers and other riffraff, so it's nice and tidy now.

Worth a visit, if you're interested. If you have a couple of days to spare on the back end of your trip, you could ship your outdoor gear back home from Seattle and take a train down to Portland, check out the night life. The Laurelthirst Pub was always the place to go for some good music, you can get a walletectomy at Powell's and get a load of books in exchange, and so on.
