welcome to dic.

as for your problem, you just need to know how to use the gradiant tool. i'm assuming the graphics program you are using has one. Then you just need be able to picture in your mind what it will look like. Pick a spot where the light is coming from and you kinda need to draw the light by hand and use the gradiant tool to create your effect.

sorry, i can't think of any easy ways of doing it, other then good ol drawing skills

it might look a bit better if you took the "light blobs" around the cracks and faded them to 0% opacity around the edges. Maybe also if you give the letter a bit of a glow w/ the same color. Looks good!

ok, this is photoshop-centric, but here is how i'd recommend:

:: do your type
:: copy the type layer
:: make a selection inside of the text & add noise (monochromatic, level of whatever you think (tweak w/it))
:: blur>radial blue & select zoom (once again, tweak w/the levels)
:: drop the blurred layer behind the 'real' text.
:: you're done.....(maybe add a 'slight' outer glow/stroke to the 'real' text to help it stand out, if neccesary...)

I was actually not really happy with the results above so I messed around a little and came up with a better way. I've done some tests and it looks great, but don't have a new image. I may post one up if i get time to mess with it.

Here's my thoughts though...

With the same cracked letter I thought of making a slew of masks emminating from the crack. These masks would be random around it. Then I would apply a lens flare dirtectly over the crack. Then with the masked pieces, delete the portions of the lens flare under them. The effect looks great, only not that great when I did it 'over' the image above, but the potential to really look awesome on a freash image is definately there.

I'll have to just do it and show you guys.
