Asimov and Lem are my two favourites for classic sci-fi but if I fancy something completely off the wall Jef Noon rocks.
There are too many from each to narrow down to a favourite but most memorable are:
Asimov - one I cant' remember the name of where a detective and his android partner Daneel Olivaw have to investigate a murder commited by a robot on a planet where no-one meets in person but uses holographic rooms instead.
Lem - Return from the stars
Noon - Vurt

I love me some hardcore sci-fi David Webber is one of my favorite Author's and makes the starwars galaxy seem as shallow as Sesame Street. http://en.wikipedia....onor_Harrington Then again I like ship to ship naval combat even more so in space.
Timothy Zahn IMHO is the best Starwars Author. with the Thrawn trilogy being better then the shit Lucas came up with for episodes 1 2 & 3
I cant forget to tip my hat to Orson Scott Card. Enders Game is the gold standard for sci - fi
There is a little known book called the "Black Pearl" that is a collection of short stories that include a lot of cowboy bebop type stuff. For example the first story is about a corporate colony on one of the Martian moons that is on to something but there is a yakuzza assassin and a plot to suppress the research of who built the mars face. I actually only picked it up because orson scott card wrote the preface. (I figured if this is what he reads then it has to be good)

Ender's Game (well, ender's game and all the sequels- xenocide, speaker for the dead, children of the mind)
The White Mountains trilogy. Yes, this is like high school reading level, but they're classics.
Hitchhiker's Guide. No, not really scifi. But still awesome.

LOL, by that definition, everything ever written is science fiction.
Humpty Dumpty involves gravity...
Yes..but I think the fact that Hitchikers is about the end of the world at the hands of aliens which Arthur and Ford escape by stowing away on a space ship pushes it more firmly into the sci-fi genre than falling down does for Humpty

I just recently bought "The Ultimate Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy" which comes with a bonus story plus all 5. Anyways I bought it in the Science Fiction section. Good Book BTW.
Im halfway through it - something I should have read a long time ago.
Now Stephen King is located in the Fiction section in Barnes and Noble. But I like basically anything by him.
