Joysticks

Posted 22 January 2018 - 01:20 PM

We all had Joysticks back in the day when graphics were really bad..

But Elite: Dangerous the new one (of course) takes us back to a time when Joysticks were a must !

My favourite Joystick.. would be this one...

https://www.amazon.c...coop_bw_c_x_2_w

how about you ?

Does anyone still use Joysticks or is it all gamepads for the playstation or xbox ?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Well do keep in mind that Playstation controllers essentially have joysticks for your thumbs. So pretty much everyone still uses them. Albeit a bit smaller and won't throw out your shoulder... just your thumb maybe.

No self respecting flight sim enthusiast would be using a gamepad controller to land a Boeing 777... Or would they?

IMHO, MechWarrior can only be played with a joystick. :) It's why I still have old Microsoft Joystick with force feedback hiding in the attic for the game re-release.

Aside from being mildly amused that your preferred joystick sounds even more like a sex toy: Thrustmaster VG?!? One can only imagine what VG might stand for... I will always recall fondly the more halcyon times of Atari and its wabisabi minimalist input: https://bestofthe80s...9/the-joystick/

A single responsive button and a sturdy, hard, single rod that could take a beating... ahem, right, you get the idea. :P

I currently have a Nintendo Switch, mostly because I love Skyrim. It's a rather standard nuevo controller with multiple knobs and buttons placed in theoretically ergonomic positions. These things make me feel like a stroke patient! I know the game well enough to suffer through. It's not action oriented and I intentionally made a magic based character so I can AoE nuke stuff to make up for my poor control. Give me WASD and a mouse over these button knob behemoths any day.

Unfortunately the plastic sheet holding the metal dome nipples inside the joystick couldn't take the beating. I recall disassembling my Atari joysticks nightly to re-align the contacts after a day's worth of playing Fort Apocalypse or Raid on Bungling Bay. I recall I was seriously considering etching/engraving little pockets into the plastic baseboard for the legs of the nipples to minimize the slipping.

Is Atari, then, the originator of the slippery nipple?

At one time, I REALLY wanted this Cougar for playing Falcon 4.0. The game came with a BOOK as a manual. You actually had to do flight school to learn how to fly the damn thing, but it was AWESOME

Really?

My original 2600 joystick was as trooper. In the end all the yellow paint had completely worn off and the rubber sheath on the white plastic rod itself had come off, but the thing kept working. Actually, I used it on an Atari 800 as well. I believe they may have gotten cheaper with each iteration, as the joystick that came with the computer didn't seem to quite measure up.

I think it depends on the game play. Mine held out well two years prior to that with various other games, but most of the games were the tap the joystick in a particular direction, and then let go. It was after I first picked up PitStop II, that I started seeing issues with the "up" contact. Then later after I picked up Raid on Bungeling Bay, that the various direction contacts started having issues. Fort Apocalypse was hard on the "left" and "right".

Hmm... I don't know that Raid on Bungeling Bay every made it to Atari. Maybe you beat up one of those cheap C64 controllers? ;)

Yeah, Fort Apocalypse caused some wear and tear. The best one on that old Atari 800 was probably Joust. I ended up giving the box to a kid with about 300 double sided 5.25" floppies worth of games. The floppy drive was the size of a toaster. I hope it died well.

Perhaps... Or I got a counterfeit Atari... It's amazing what stuff you can get in the Philippines.

If I was a younger man and the multiplayer servers were still online I'd have half a mind to bend you over my mad cat and spank you with my mouse and keyboard.
