What occurs when a new device logins into the network

Posted 31 January 2018 - 09:28 PM

Hi,

I'm looking in writing a script in py that'll detect when someone is home via the network recognizing a new device is in the network. In other words, my room has his iPhone connected to our network. When he leaves for work, he clearly loses that connection, but I want to know what happens when he pulls up the driveway and his phone is added back on the network.

Particularly, I want to know when my roommates get home before they even open the door.

I just don't know what to look for.

Thank you,

You should be able to get the MAC address of the phone from the router. Then scan the ARP tables for it's existence on the network.
