Help me with my website!

Posted 18 February 2018 - 11:46 AM

I've tried to make a website in raw HTML, but I am not a professional programmer. You can see it here:
My Homepage
Do you have some ideas on how to improve it that are easy to program?

BTW, how is the PacMan working on your smartphone?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

What is your connection with that Pacman? If you wrote it then make this clear.

Well, yes, I wrote it.
When studying SVG, I came to the idea that, using SVG, it will be easy to make a PacMan follow your finger on smartphones. And it is, the game is just 550 lines (certainly less than it would be in Objective-C or Java, yet alone C++). I've tested it on Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, and it works there.
I am not sure if it would work on other smartphones though.

No suggestions? For instance, how do I make the Javascript-generated SVGs in the corners render better in Chrome and Mozilla (they are only rendered well in Safari and Opera, and look whitish in Chrome and Mozilla)? Any ideas as to why Opera and Internet Explorer appear to ignore half of the CSS?

The color scheme is rough.

I don't quite get what the bouncing arrow is for.

You should pick a better scheme adn stick with it. No particular reason to have a 'chose your style'.

It's not really mobile friendly.

I don't have so much time to learn those things. Do you think that using a grayscale might solve the problem with the colours?

*shrug* Maybe? Reading a bit of basic color theory is helpful and I would advocate making time.

I've always thought it doesn't really matter which colours you use as long as you don't use high-saturation colours. Is there some truth to that?

Well.. no. Ugly colors exist.
Ugly color combinations exist.
Bad color placement exists.

1. Colors theme is really bad. reminds me of 1990 super old websites. here is a link for color theme

2. bad layout. again spend some time designing a layout in photoshop or even free paint. here is a link to some good layouts

3. bad menu design. when you hover over menu, its hard to read sub-items bc of colors.

4. bad animations: i would remove animcations on "back to top" button (bottom righto)

5. bad text fonts and formating.

6. come up with a logo

7. on IE, your color getting messed up. back to top doesn't work on IE.

8. On Google chrome, your layout getting messed up when you make the window smaller

here is some basic steps of create/desiging a website

also easy on the color gradient

always remember, "less is more"

Anyway, the guys on the xkcd forums helped me fix the code errors. Now the site works in Opera and Internet Explorer.

GC: CSS error, got fixed. Anything else?

IE: What problem went wrong? Do you wanna ask Dr. Watson for help?

Wow, you made that site by yourself? How long did it take? What's it about, actually? To be honest, I am not sure it looks attractive to a lot of people.

Anyway, I've found some time to try to improve my website. I've tried to make it a little more responsive, so that the layout doesn't break down completely even when the window is small. I've also tried to make a little more mobile friendly by making the font in the "<main>" larger when the "navigator.userAgent" contains the string "Mobile", but something weird is going on. The layout gets completely messed up in mobile Chrome and the text is even harder to read (the zooming doesn't help there). I simply can't find out what's going on, for now I've just added some browser-sniffing not to do that in Chrome. The script is included in all the webpages on the website, yet it appears to work on some pages, but to do nothing on some in mobile Safari. It seems to work fine only in the Android Stock Browser.

It's a bit depressive to see that after five years of trying to learn how to program, I'm still not able to build a decent website.

Mind you there is a difference in "learning to program" and "learning design".
